Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is a new way to enter the Star Wars world

As someone who grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy being my childhood’s guiding light, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement when it comes to the upcoming series, Skeleton Crew. The idea of exploring the vastness of the Star Wars universe through the innocent and wide-eyed perspective of a group of 10-year-old kids is nothing short of genius.

Most people recall a time when they got lost as children, but consider the fear of being lost in another galaxy, with no reliable figure to guide you back home.

The concept behind “Skeleton Crew” is deeply unsettling to ponder, even for grown-ups, yet it’s the everyday life for the principal characters in the story. In a recent Star Wars Filmmaker Roundtable discussion with the creators of this coming-of-age narrative, Jon Watts, the show’s creator, discussed what sets “Skeleton Crew” apart from other Star Wars series.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan myself, I can tell you about an incredible experience I had working alongside Jude Law and an amazing cast of young actors, under the guidance of directors like Bryce Dallas Howard (known for her work in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett). For us, every moment of creating a show set within the Star Wars universe was nothing short of magical. We were in awe of the intricate props that filled our set and the sheer craftsmanship that went into recreating the beloved aspects of Star Wars we’ve grown up with on screen.

After five years of producing Star Wars live-action series like “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka,” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” it’s challenging to introduce something fresh. To break new ground, the creators, including Jon Watts, are planning a show that narrates a Star Wars tale through the eyes of a child. This concept holds immense promise as these children find themselves navigating an unfamiliar and perilous galaxy filled with novel experiences. They’ll be light-years away from their secure, idyllic homeworld, unable to return. Jon Watts revealed that this upcoming show will explore the children’s struggles and adventures in a vast, dangerous galaxy where everything is new to them.

I’m excited for people to see Skeleton Crew because it’s the same Star Wars universe that you know and you love. It’s just a new perspective. The ability to see that world through the eyes of four 10-year-old kids, I think is a completely new way to enter this world that some of us know and love, and some of us maybe haven’t ever really experienced before.

It seems that Watts and Christopher Ford might have found a secret formula to maintain Star Wars as engaging, enjoyable, and intriguing for new audiences. While we’ve experienced various Star Wars narratives from different characters like Jedi, Sith, smugglers, bounty hunters, etc., there is no replacement for exploring the universe through a child’s perspective.

As a Star Wars enthusiast, I can say we all remember the awe-struck moments when we first dived into this galaxy far, far away. For those of us who got lost in its vastness, the magic is something we’ll all find familiar. Just like when we stumbled upon this epic franchise, I hope that many more fans will be captivated by Star Wars, thanks to the upcoming series, Skeleton Crew. Telling stories from fresh viewpoints has always been a winning strategy for Star Wars. It worked for A New Hope, it resonated in The Mandalorian, and it continues with shows like Andor. I’m optimistic that the same formula will captivate audiences with Skeleton Crew.

Skeleton Crew premieres December 3 on Disney+.
