Star Wars’ silence on The Mandalorian’s 5 year anniversary leaves fans upset

Star Wars' silence on The Mandalorian's 5 year anniversary leaves fans upset

As a long-time fan of Star Wars and particularly The Mandalorian, I find myself both baffled and disappointed by Lucasfilm’s apparent lack of recognition for the show’s 5th anniversary. I remember the excitement when Grogu made his debut and how it rekindled my love for this universe. Merchandise has been flying off shelves since then, and we even have a Mando movie in production!

At D23 Brazil, Lucasfilm didn’t present a lot that would excite Mando fans, yet, fans kept their spirits high since the highly anticipated 5th anniversary of the show was imminent.

As a devoted fan, I was genuinely looking forward to celebrating Mando’s birthday with updates from the Star Wars official accounts on social media. However, the silence was deafening – a stark contrast to what we’ve come to expect. It seems Lucasfilm has missed another opportunity to shine, following a pattern of falling short on significant days like May the Fourth. On such occasions, we anticipate exciting glimpses into upcoming projects. This time, their silence not only left us disappointed and bewildered, but it also felt unsettling.

Some fans are starting to think there might be a deliberate avoidance of the show ‘The Mandalorian’ from Lucasfilm, while others expressed their thoughts on social media by reminding the Star Wars Official account about the series’ fifth anniversary. A fan posted, “Hey, today marks the 5th anniversary of The Mandalorian. Maybe it’s time to acknowledge the show that rejuvenated the franchise.” Another tweeted, “I feel a bit silly for wishing Disney+ a happy anniversary too- and Star Wars didn’t even bother!

Star Wars' silence on The Mandalorian's 5 year anniversary leaves fans upset

Without a doubt, “The Mandalorian” has breathed new life into the Star Wars franchise over the past five years, captivating both old and new fans, particularly children. Since its debut, merchandise related to the show, especially Grogu, has been selling like hotcakes. Currently, there’s a Mando movie in production with a major Hollywood star. Yet, it seems that Lucasfilm has not acknowledged this successful day. There are whispers of a dispute between Jon Favreau and Lucasfilm executives; is this speculation founded?

Is there a concern that The Mandalorian might be perceived as less relevant as the focus shifts towards sequel-era characters and upcoming movies within the Star Wars franchise? If the franchise is indeed seeking to explore a new era less reliant on Skywalkers, The Mandalorian offers an excellent fit. Beyond occasional appearances by Luke Skywalker, The Mandalorian can stand independently, leading fans to question why Lucasfilm seems to overlook them. Is the fanbase overreacting, or does it appear that The Mandalorian has lost favor with Disney and Lucasfilm?

It was observed that the individual managing the official Star Wars X account was active during the show’s anniversary, a person often referred to as “Swagmin.” Interestingly, this admin responded to fans of ‘Andor’ and ‘Skeleton Crew,’ but chose not to acknowledge any tweets related to the 5th anniversary of ‘The Mandalorian.’ This oversight was particularly noticeable given that Disney+, which also celebrated its anniversary on the same day, remained silent. As ‘The Mandalorian’ is a cornerstone show for Disney+, having played a significant role in the platform’s launch, the lack of recognition from both Star Wars and Disney+ seems unfortunate. It’s understandable why fans might feel overlooked in this situation. It appears that Star Wars needs to address this issue because it’s unclear why ‘The Mandalorian’s‘ anniversary should be disregarded without explanation.

In a tough lineup featuring shows like “The Crown,” “Succession,” “Big Little Lies,” “Ozark,” Marvel productions such as “Loki” and “WandaVision,” “The Mandalorian” has held its own, earning nominations for a Golden Globe Award and 15 Emmy Awards. I’d strongly recommend that fans of this beloved series continue to express their adoration for the characters they cherish so much. If Star Wars fails to recognize them, it’s their loss. Currently, the storyline has transitioned to the big screen, and it’ll take the unwavering support of Din and Grogu’s supporters to make “The Mandalorian & Grogu” a blockbuster hit. Perhaps the financial success of this series will eventually compel Star Wars and Disney+ to acknowledge their most-watched original production and its dedicated fanbase once more.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+.
