At the ongoing Star Wars Celebration 2025 event, she clarified whether there was any basis to the gossip that she would be handing over control of the franchise to a new leader after over a decade in charge.

During the current festivities, questions arose about the retirement speculations regarding Kathleen Kennedy. When asked directly if there was any validity to the rumors suggesting her resignation and potential replacement by figures like Kevin Feige from Marvel Studios, she made it unequivocally clear with the following statement:

According to Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan, who was present at the event, he inquired about Kathleen Kennedy’s comments regarding the studio discussions and fan communication, to which she responded that she always shares the truth with fans. Essentially, it appears that rumors of Kennedy’s retirement have been largely unfounded.

Kathleen Kennedy’s ‘Star Wars’ Legacy Has Been Deeply Divisive

After achieving great success in Hollywood, with notable roles in movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, The Goonies, and the Back to the Future trilogy, among others, Kathleen Kennedy was made President of Lucasfilm in 2012. She then revitalized Star Wars by turning it into a major movie event with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, which grossed over $2 billion worldwide and received critical acclaim from both critics and fans.

Initially, the Star Wars series seemed to be off to a strong start. But, the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017 sparked significant disagreement within the franchise community. This divisive film garnered high praise from critics with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were less impressed, giving it a score of just 41%. The situation didn’t improve with the final installment, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In contrast to the previous film, this movie received lower ratings from critics at 51%, while audiences seemed more pleased with an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Besides the controversial sequel trilogy, many fans believe that the original charm of Star Wars has been diluted by the numerous spin-offs that are now scattered across Disney+. Starting with The Mandalorian, a number of Star Wars series have since appeared, and there are more in development, as Lucasfilm and Disney seem determined to milk every last bit of the legendary franchise.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the gossips about Kathleen Kennedy stepping down for quite some time now. Lately, there have been whispers suggesting a possible change in leadership, but as of my latest updates, Kennedy has refuted any imminent plans for retirement. While she admits that discussions on potential successors pop up occasionally, it seems like we’re still a ways off from seeing a new face at the helm.
