Star Wars Reveals First Look At Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter Character (Photo)

Shawn Levy, the director known for *Star Wars: Starfighter*, recently revealed the first images of Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray’s characters in the new *Star Wars* movie. Announced at Star Wars Celebration last April, this film takes place several years after *Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker* (2019) and features a cast including Gosling, Gray, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, and Aaron Pierre.

I was so excited to see production for *Star Wars: Starfighter* kick off in August 2025! Lucasfilm even gave us a first glimpse of Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray as their characters while they were filming. And director Shawn Levy really started building the hype when he shared a closer look at them in costume on Instagram, just ahead of the movie’s release on May 28, 2027. It’s so cool to see these two actors bringing these unnamed characters to life!

Ryan Gosling’s character appears to be a tough, possibly rogue-ish, protector, suggesting he might be a smuggler or someone similar. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Gray plays a younger person who is being pursued by villains across the galaxy.

The new movie, *Star Wars: Starfighter*, is breaking with tradition in two ways: it’s the first *Star Wars* film not connected to the Skywalker family story, and it features a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, and Aaron Pierre.

What Fans Can Expect in Star Wars: Starfighter’s Plot

Okay, so after seeing Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray’s characters in the first look at the new *Star Wars: Starfighter* movie, it’s clear they’ve both been through the wringer – definitely look like they’ve been running from something! It does feel a little familiar, honestly, echoing the whole dynamic we saw with Din Djarin and Grogu in *The Mandalorian*. But I’m still hopeful! I think the success of *Starfighter* really hinges on how well Gosling and Gray play off each other – their relationship is going to be key.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been thinking about Gosling’s character and I have a theory. Beyond just being a pilot, what if he has a secret past connected to the First Order? Maybe he flew for them when they were gaining power, but switched sides after the Resistance won. That would add so much depth to his relationship with Gray’s character – imagine him starting as someone who’s almost forced to protect this kid, and then gradually becoming a real father figure. It would be a really compelling arc, I think.

Whether Flynn Gray’s character in the new Star Wars film has abilities with the Force is still unknown. However, a way to make this character stand out from *The Mandalorian* would be to portray them as rebellious and a bit of a troublemaker – constantly getting into difficulty while also trying to look out for Gosling’s character.
