Star Wars: Rebels Still Has the Best Redemption Arc in the Franchise

Rebels, one of the initial Star Wars projects from Disney, is recognized as one of the top installments in the extended sci-fi series. This show follows the years preceding the Original Trilogy where the Rebel Alliance gradually gains strength and power in their struggle against the Empire. A key team of Rebels serves as the driving force in challenging the Empire, aiming to undermine its authority before the Galactic Civil War begins.

In the franchise; this transformation is partially attributed to its incorporation of familiar Star Wars themes. Known for its redemption narratives, where a seemingly irredeemable and hopeless character eventually reforms and seeks atonement, Star Wars showcases this best with Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy. Although redemptive arcs are common in Star Wars, Rebels masterfully employs this storytelling device by featuring an unexpected character who undergoes a dramatic turnaround, providing the Rebellion with a much-needed boost against the Empire.

In the Star Wars universe, we encounter Agent Aleksandr Kallus, a prominent figure in the Imperial Security Bureau, tasked with quelling the rebellion on Lothal. The Phoenix Squad, headed by Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus, repeatedly targeted Imperial outposts on Lothal before the full-scale war began, which led to the Empire deploying one of their top agents, Kallus, to demonstrate the consequences of rebellion. Throughout numerous confrontations with the rebels, Kallus proved to be a cold and persistent adversary for the Phoenix team, showing no hesitation in committing heinous acts on behalf of the Empire.

As the series unfolds, it is revealed that Agent Kallus was responsible for the massacre that came close to wiping out the entire Lesat population, with Garazeb “Zeb” Orellios being one of the rare survivors. To both the rebels and the audience, Kallus appears as an unforgivable antagonist.

It’s shocking when it’s revealed that Agent Kallus becomes one of the Rebels’ most crucial assets during their battle. In the series’ final seasons, Kallus undergoes a moral dilemma following a significant emotional encounter with Zeb. Eventually, he assumes the role of “Fulcrum,” previously held by Ahsoka Tano. As Fulcrum, Kallus starts leaking confidential Imperial data to the Rebels, providing them an advantage over numerous adversaries, including Grand Admiral Thrawn. It doesn’t take long for Thrawn to realize that Kallus is a spy, but even after his capture, the ex-ISB agent remains resolute and won’t betray his new comrades. By the end of Rebels, Kallus has fully integrated into the Rebellion, joining forces with his former foes in Lothal’s Liberation. In a surprising turn of events, Aleksandr Kallus emerges as a hero of the Rebellion, boasting one of the most remarkable redemption arcs in Star Wars history.

Why Kallus’s Arc Works So Well

Kallus Only Redeems Himself After a Long Period of Reflection

The development of Kallus’s character in Star Wars: Rebels is effectively portrayed over four seasons due to its gradual and profound growth. An unexpected event occurs where Zeb rescues Kallus after they are both stranded on a Geonosian moon, which leaves a lasting impact on Kallus. He is taken aback by Zeb’s selflessness, as he himself would not have extended the same courtesy had their roles been reversed. This life-altering incident challenges Kallus’s long-held beliefs about the Rebels, leading him to realize that they are not entirely evil.

As the series progresses, Kallus starts questioning the Empire’s morality as well. He is shocked to discover that the Empire is predominantly corrupt, a revelation that deeply disturbs him. This realization sets the stage for Kallus to gradually align himself with the Rebels. Initially, he takes baby steps, intervening to save Zeb from Imperial capture. However, as time passes, his actions become bolder until he ultimately transforms into a double agent. The audience is able to witness Kallus’s internal conflict and eventual commitment to the Rebel cause.

In contrast to other storylines, Kallus’s narrative unfolds gradually across four seasons, providing ample time for it to develop naturally. Unlike the rapid progression of some comparable storylines, such as Anakin Skywalker’s fall and subsequent transformation into Darth Vader, which happens relatively quickly, or Kylo Ren’s redemption arc in the Sequel Trilogy that also moves swiftly, Kallus stands out with a more comprehensive redemption journey, earning him the unique position of having the most detailed redemption arc within the entire Skywalker Saga.

Whatever Happened to Agent Kallus?

Kallus’s Fate Remains Uncertain

Following his redemption, Aleksandr Kallus joined the Rebel Alliance fully and participated in the Galactic Civil War. His efforts contributed to the permanent downfall of the Empire. The end of Star Wars: Rebels shows that not only did Kallus survive the war but so did Phoenix Squadron. In the aftermath, due to his contributions and redemption, Kallus was given access to the hidden hyperspace routes leading to the new Lesat homeworld. This marked a turning point for Kallus, as he discovered that he was not responsible for the total annihilation of the Lesat race, as he had assumed earlier.

It’s plausible that we might see the character Kallus reappear in future Star Wars projects, potentially wrapping up his storyline. Given that many members of the Rebels cast have been confirmed to return, it seems likely that Kallus could reunite with his comrades for the climactic battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn.
