After eight years, the makers of Star Wars have chosen a new actor to play a key villain. As the franchise approaches its 50th anniversary, some cast changes have been expected, and while most have been accepted by fans, others have caused disagreement.
A notable example of recasting is Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars saga. In The Empire Strikes Back, he appeared as a hologram, with Clive Revill providing the voice and Marjorie Eaton portraying him physically. However, starting with Return of the Jedi and in all subsequent live-action Star Wars films and series, Ian McDiarmid took on the role of the iconic villain.
Because the Star Wars prequel trilogy was set decades before the original films, several characters needed to be played by different actors. This included Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Boba Fett, Owen and Beru Lars, and Mon Mothma (though her scene was eventually removed from Revenge of the Sith). Later, when The Clone Wars animated series was made, most of the prequel voice actors were replaced. Key examples include Matt Lanter taking over the role of Anakin, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan, and Ian Abercrombie and Tim Curry both voicing Palpatine.
During the time Disney has been making Star Wars shows and movies, Benjamin Bratt took over the role of Bail Organa in season 2 of Andor because Jimmy Smits couldn’t return due to his work schedule. Alden Ehrenreich previously played a young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, alongside Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Now, another character from Solo is being played by a different actor – this time, it’s the main villain who was first introduced in that movie.
Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Recasts Dryden Vos
Be warned, this contains spoilers for the final two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 1. The character of Dryden Vos, who appeared in the film Solo, is voiced by a different actor in these episodes. While Paul Bettany originally played the role in Solo, Scott Whyte provides the voice here. Whyte is a voice actor known for his work on projects like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots, and the Batman: Arkham Shadow video game.
In the season finale of Shadow Lord, Dryden makes a deal with Maul (played by Sam Witwer). He promises Maul and his crew safe escape from the Imperial planet Janix if Maul agrees to kill Rintero, the head of the Crimson Dawn crime organization. After a near-fatal confrontation with Darth Vader, Maul arrives on Dryden’s ship and confirms he’ll fulfill his part of the agreement.
When Dryden appears as a hologram in episode 9 of Maul – Shadow Lord, his voice sounds a bit different than Paul Bettany’s, but it still fits the character we met in Solo. The show didn’t announce the actor change beforehand, keeping Dryden’s first appearance in season 1 a surprise.
It’s fairly common for voice actors to change in Star Wars animated series, as we saw with The Clone Wars. This even happened with the character of Maul, who was originally portrayed physically by Ray Park and voiced by Peter Serafinowicz in The Phantom Menace. Sam Witwer first began voicing Maul in The Clone Wars and has continued in that role for Star Wars Rebels and several LEGO Star Wars projects.
Dryden Vos Will Have A Much Bigger Role In Shadow Lord Season 2
Dryden appeared in the final episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord season 1, but didn’t have much screen time because the story mainly focused on Maul, Devon Izara, and the other main characters as they faced Darth Vader and tried to escape Janix. However, Dryden will be a much more central character in season 2, thanks to his new partnership with Maul.
In Solo, Dryden Vos is the primary villain and leader of Crimson Dawn, but he suggests he’s taking orders from a higher power. That power is eventually revealed to be Maul, who secretly runs the entire criminal organization. The filmmakers planned to delve deeper into this connection in a follow-up movie, but those plans were canceled when Solo didn’t do well in theaters.
The series Shadow Lord acts as a prequel, showing how Maul rose to power. While he was already known in the criminal world through the Shadow Collective during the Clone Wars, Shadow Lord season 1 depicts him taking control of the Pyke Syndicate – a significant step in his journey. This new alliance and the elimination of Crimson Dawn’s leader are crucial to understanding how Maul ultimately becomes the most powerful crime boss in the Star Wars universe during this era, with Scott Whyte expected to reprise his role as Dryden’s voice in season 2.
