A dedicated Star Wars enthusiast might have recently found evidence suggesting that the New York Knicks are part of the Star Wars universe, but this is true from a specific perspective. Few elements from our actual world intersect with the galaxy depicted in Star Wars, yet it’s not uncommon for George Lucas and other Star Wars creators to draw inspiration from our reality when crafting the fantastical worlds we’ve witnessed in a distant galaxy.

In the realm of Star Wars, sports have generally taken a backseat to other elements and often served as means for characters to engage in gambling. For instance, there’s sabacc, a card game that resembles poker in our world. Furthermore, sports such as podracing, introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and riot racing from Star Wars: The Bad Batch, have captured the hearts of fans.

Although it’s evident that elements like gambling, racing, and combat are present in Star Wars, I find myself pondering about other sports within this universe and whether there exist any professional leagues. Nevertheless, a hint from the prequel era makes me curious if perhaps some of the major North American sports might surface in Star Wars.

Does This Make The New York Rangers & New York Knicks Star Wars Canon?

Twitter user @CobaltGreen1138 pointed out an interesting detail in the Star Wars prequels: if you zoom into the cityscape of Coruscant, it’s possible to spot Madison Square Garden hidden among other buildings. Being a New Yorker who often frequents this iconic arena, this discovery was quite exciting for them. This suggests that elements connected with Madison Square Garden might also be included in the Star Wars universe’s canon.

What I’d like to know is if the New York Rangers ice hockey team and the New York Knicks basketball team still use Madison Square Garden as their home arena, which appears in the Star Wars universe on Coruscant. It’s probable that they don’t, but for a fan of New York sports, especially the Rangers and Knicks, it’s thrilling to find a connection between my passion for sports and my love for Star Wars.

Given the vast size and dense population of Coruscant, one might reasonably assume that it has its own professional sports teams. Here’s hoping these intergalactic Rangers and Knicks outshine their counterparts from New York by winning more titles.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the mesmerizing city-planet that is Coruscant. Unlike traditional planets with natural landscapes, Coruscant’s surface has been meticulously transformed into a sprawling urban landscape. This remarkable cityscape served as the beating heart of both the Republic and the Galactic Empire, housing their respective governments.

However, it’s fascinating to ponder that not every structure on Coruscant was an original creation birthed from the prequels’ imagination. The source of this intriguing blend remains a mystery, whether it was George Lucas himself or one of the creative minds behind the prequels who authorized the incorporation of real-world structures into Coruscant’s surface.

On a sprawling and urbanized planet like Coruscant, it’s reasonable to assume that animators might have combined images from various real-world cities to create a more populated feel. This way, they could avoid designing every detail of the planet for the prequel movies. It’s debatable whether Madison Square Garden was included in Coruscant merely as a space filler or if someone involved in the Star Wars prequels intentionally inserted one of the world’s most iconic arenas as a hidden tribute for dedicated fans to discover.

New York City Is Very Similar To Coruscant

So It’s The Perfect City to Include In Star Wars

In my perspective, the resemblance between Coruscant and New York City is quite striking. Both cities are bustling urban hubs, each housing a significant government entity – Coruscant accommodates the Senate, while New York City is home to the United Nations. Moreover, both cities show a distinct class divide. In Coruscant, wealth seems to increase as one moves closer to the surface, much like how New York has districts that range from affluent to economically disadvantaged. Given these parallels, it’s not surprising that a New York icon like Madison Square Garden found its place in the Coruscant skyline.

In the Star Wars universe, it’s unusual to find real-world references; however, spotting a slice of New York City on Coruscant is delightful. Although Madison Square Garden doesn’t significantly impact the storyline within the world, it’s intriguing to speculate about other famous real-life buildings that might be concealed in Star Wars.
