Star Wars Outlaws’ Humberly González talks Kay Vess and auditioning for Star Wars
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming release of Star Wars Outlaws has me more excited than a Wookiee at Hanukkah. The character Kay Vess, played by Humberly González, sounds like an intriguing addition to the Star Wars universe, with her charm and swagger reminiscent of a certain smuggler we all know and love.
The upcoming “Star Wars Outlaws” is just about here, set for release on August 30th. Lead actor Humberly González and Creative Director Julian Gerighty recently chatted with IGN during gamescom 2024 to share insights on the characters and the casting process for a new Star Wars video game.
Describing Kay Vess’s character in Star Wars, González shared, “From the very first audition, there was a unique demeanor about her – she charms and swaggers her way towards her goals, grabbing opportunities as they come. I ensured that she remained self-assured, even when faking it till you make it, because although she has flaws, this character is bold.”
I think it naturally came to me. I always love playing characters that are a little bit sassy and witty, kind of quick to clap back. I just kind of used that natural attitude that came to me, and obviously, the character depends on once we knew it was a scoundrel story, that I was in Star Wars. The tone just adds to the relevance of the world.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve often wondered about the selection process for something as iconic as Star Wars. González gave us a glimpse into the inner workings, sharing, “Five months prior to the initial audition, I initially thought it was a cowboy western with possibly some robots thrown in. The characters seemed grand, and there was an unmistakable aura around them. However, never for a moment did I suspect that it could be Star Wars. [The creators] must have believed they were being quite obvious.”]
In simpler terms, Julian Gerighty, Creative Director at Lucasfilm Games, provided extra insights about the audition phase, explaining that “This is how it works at Lucasfilm Games. We need to conceal the initial scripts. Some were centered around Westerns, while others were pirate-themed. These were distributed, and everything was kept hidden. Therefore, we had to write alternative scripts just to initiate the casting process.”
When asked about the actors’ reactions upon learning they’d be part of a galaxy far, far away, Gerighty shared that we captured the genuine responses from the performers once they discovered it was for Star Wars. The enthusiasm was palpable. It seems that the love for Star Wars is widespread, and there’s a profound connection to that universe and galaxy in particular.
Star Wars Outlaws is out on August 30 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
