Star Wars’ New Force Power Finally Explains How Leia Survived Space

Seven years following the incident, a fresh application of the Force provides an answer as to how Princess Leia managed to endure in outer space – a scene that remains vividly etched in our memories, and admittedly, quite extraordinary, even for Star Wars fans. In The Last Jedi, the Resistance’s flagship was hit by a First Order assault, causing Princess Leia to be ejected into space. However, contrary to expectations, she did not perish; instead, she employed the Force to thrust herself back to safety in one of the most astonishing scenes ever recorded in Star Wars lore.

In the movie, Leia paid a price for her experience, spending most of it in a healing coma. But what made this happen? A recent “Star Wars” novel, Justina Ireland’s “Wayseeker,” offers an intriguing explanation. It appears that Leia utilized an uncommon Force ability, something that was likely feasible due to her Chosen One lineage.

Star Wars’ New Force Power Explained

The narrative of “Wayseeker” unfolds towards the close of the High Republic Era, an era renowned for the Jedi’s and Republic’s prosperity. This tale focuses on Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh, depicting her evolution from the character portrayed in previous literature to the one played by Rebecca Henderson in “The Acolyte”. In a pivotal scene, she imparts her wisdom to another Jedi, Indara, who is the character played by Carrie-Anne Moss in “The Acolyte”.

Vern instructs Indara on utilizing the Force to control her body heat. While this ability might appear insignificant, primarily for use in harsh exploration settings, it’s remarkably potent in truth.

The elder Jedi explained, “Let’s proceed as follows: Sit on the floor to avoid falling off that empty crate. Now, you’ll feel the metal beneath you is hot, and that’s normal. Use your connection to the Force to dissipate the excess heat by visualizing it escaping with each breath. You’ll gradually feel more comfortable. Remember to stay hydrated. Using the Force can make you feel less uncomfortable, but it won’t change your actual body temperature significantly – at least not until you master this technique. Some say that Jedi have used this ability to endure the harsh temperatures of space without a suit, but I believe that might be just a legend.

How Leia Unlocked This New Force Power

In a different phrasing, Leia, being the daughter of the Chosen One, shared all of Anakin Skywalker’s latent abilities, as shown in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” It turned out that Leia had received more Jedi training than we initially realized, which allowed her to sense and follow the Force’s will. This inherent understanding ultimately saved her life.

As depicted in the comic book adaptation of “The Last Jedi” (penned by Gary Whitta, Michael Walsh, and Mike Spicer), it was shown that Leia used the Force to perceive her future. There are instances when the future is fluid, and it’s during these times that clarity can be found. The comic provides a glimpse into Leia’s mindset at that moment:

Could this be the culmination of a lifelong struggle, defiance, and persistence? Luke once shared with me that the future is elusive and hard to discern… But as I search within the Force for a hint of my own, it has never felt more apparent. The end? It’s reminiscent of the torment of Hell.

It’s clear that the conversation fits perfectly with Princess Leia’s persona. Moreover, it provides a straightforward account of how Leia managed to survive in space; She tapped into the Force and acted upon its guidance. In this instance, we learn that she activated a Force ability that even advanced Jedi had struggled to achieve, regulating her body heat to stay alive.

It’s logical that the child of the Chosen One could possess such abilities; she had the capacity to be a powerful Force user in her own right, although Leia didn’t fully realize this potential. However, it’s important to note that Star Wars: The Last Jedi demonstrates that this ability came with a heavy price, as it nearly claimed Leia’s life. In reality, she survived that day, but the encounter left her physically weakened – resulting in her passing away within a year afterward, joining the Force.
