Darth Maul has a knack for reappearing in the Star Wars universe, even when it seems like his story is over. But this comeback is unique: he’s getting his own show on Disney+, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, which arrives in just a few months. The first trailer is out now, and while it’s packed with action, what’s especially interesting is the appearance of a character from the Ahsoka series in this new Star Wars show.
The story of Maul – Shadow Lord is set about a year after The Clone Wars and roughly ten years before Maul’s brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. This is a period when the Empire is firmly in control and actively hunting down any Jedi or Force-sensitive individuals who survived the execution of Order 66. Despite knowing the timeline, I was still surprised to see Marrok, an Inquisitor who first appeared in Season 1 of Ahsoka, in the trailer. Ahsoka takes place more than five years after Return of the Jedi.
In the series Ahsoka, Marrok assisted Morgan Elsbeth in her search for Grand Admiral Thrawn and fought Ahsoka Tano twice. Some viewers initially speculated that Marrok might be Ezra Bridger under mind control, but that idea was disproven when Ahsoka defeated him, and his body dissolved into green mist. Tales of the Empire revealed Marrok was actually the Inquisitor known as First Brother. However, it remains unclear what his purpose was in Ahsoka – whether he somehow survived the Empire’s fall, or if the green mist meant he was brought back to life by the Nightsisters.

The new series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, might explain some things about the character Maul. The trailer shows him battling Marrok, a fighter voiced by A.J. LoCascio (known for X-Men ’97). It makes sense that Palpatine wants Maul eliminated, considering Maul’s powerful Force abilities and their past relationship as master and apprentice. However, we already know Marrok won’t be the one to kill Maul—Obi-Wan Kenobi did that in Star Wars Rebels Season 3. This leads to the question: will Maul – Shadow Lord show Marrok’s death, either at the hands of Maul or another character?
Confirming Marrok was a reanimated corpse in Ahsoka would add depth to his character. We might find out more when Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord begins streaming on April 6th, with new episodes released weekly until the finale on May 4th—Star Wars Day. The series also stars Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, and others.
