Star Wars Just KILLED a Fan-Favorite Villain?! You Won’t Believe How!

Warning! This post contains spoilers for Andor season 2, episodes 7-9.

In its second season, the series “Andor” has shattered one of the key narrative guidelines in the Star Wars universe, adding depth to the show’s emotional intricacy. Despite being primarily focused on the emergence and development of the Rebel Alliance amidst Imperial oppression, the show offers a unique perspective into the Empire‘s administrative structure, intelligence agencies, and the individuals who are part of these entities – such as Dedra Meero and Syril Karn.

In a broader perspective, individuals working for the Empire might be portrayed as antagonists, but the series ‘Andor’ subtly conveys that conflicts between right and wrong are not always black and white. The intricate narrative of Syril in ‘Andor’ season 2 has made him one of the show’s most intriguing characters. His compulsion for order drew him towards the Empire and Dedra, yet even Syril, with his affinity for order, a strained relationship with his overbearing mother, and devotion to Dedra, eventually harbors doubts about serving the Empire. How does this ambiguity impact our perception of his character?

‘Andor’ shows us that good vs evil isn’t always clear-cut. Syril, who is drawn towards order and serves the Empire, still has moments of doubt. This complexity in his character makes us reconsider our initial assumptions about him.

Andor Actually Made Us Sympathize With A Villain’s Death

In the portrayal of Andor, it was inevitable that characters would meet their end during the depiction of the Ghorman Massacre. Such is the reality of oppression and conflict. However, Syril’s death came as a surprise to many – or at least, we didn’t foresee the specific circumstances surrounding his demise. Just moments before Dedra instigates a riot leading to the killing of innocent Ghorman civilians, Syril courageously challenges her and righteously argues that the impending destruction of the Ghormans is unwarranted.

For Syril, long-devoted hunter of those perceived as criminals, acknowledging the Empire’s violent nature and recognizing that they did not care for him personally was a monumental shift in perspective. Given his past convictions about the Empire being the guardian of law and order in the galaxy, what implications could this revelation hold for his future?

Even though he is about to fully distance himself from the Empire’s propaganda, and begins to genuinely understand and support the Ghorman resistance, his intense desire to triumph and pursue justice takes over, leading him to attack Cassian. His fury is palpable as it reaches a boiling point. He almost managed to break free, but not quite, and when Cassian reveals that Syril was involved, the sorrow in his eyes was heart-wrenchingly tragic.

Wondering what might have been in his mind as his life’s most critical mission came to an end, one can’t help but ponder the question: What if? Perhaps if Syril had acted braver, confronting Dedra and the Empire’s mission on Ghorman earlier, things would have turned out differently. However, this doesn’t mean that I’ve overlooked or excused any of his actions or those he instigated in Dedra.

We Can Understand Syril, But It Doesn’t Make Him Right

The concept of redemption is consistently present in the Star Wars saga. Numerous characters like Han Solo, Wedge Antilles, Thane Kyrell, Finn, and others turned their backs on the Empire to support the rebellion. However, Syril, though seemingly set up for such a storyline in Andor season 2, did not receive that chance. I’m grateful that Andor didn’t explore his journey extensively; it’s important to remember that not every antagonist deserves redemption, and Syril made his own decisions. He had the opportunity to let Cassian Andor go following his conversation with Dedra, but he chose not to. That decision lies with him.

Apart from its significance, Syril’s death stirs up unusual emotions in us. It’s not just that he was about to pick the right path, but rather, it seems like a tragic squandering of his potential. Syril was intelligent, talented, and reliable. In another world, he could have achieved great things; however, in this reality, he became his own downfall.

This Is The Whole Point Of Andor: Ordinary People Do Bad Things

In a different phrasing, it could be stated this way: Syril, above others perhaps, illustrates why the Empire managed to maintain its authority for such an extended period. While the Rebellion’s triumph demonstrates that there are numerous compassionate individuals across the galaxy who are prepared to take the morally correct path, as shown by the farmers in Andor season 2’s initial three episodes who aided Cassian’s allies, Syril serves as an example of ordinary people who may also be swayed towards doing what is wrong. Sometimes they are simply misinformed, sometimes they act out of self-interest, and at other times, they deliberately choose to turn a blind eye.

Instead of challenging the harsh reality that others endured, Syril chose comfort within the Empire. He experienced love and success, yet remained oblivious to the cost paid by others. Does his ability to feel love imply a good side to him? Although Syril played a lesser role, he was still part of an unkind system.

In the style of a thoughtful observer, I find myself reflecting on questions echoed in Chinua Achebe’s poem “Vultures,” which ponders the capacity for cruelty within humanity. This poem portrays a commander, who oversees the horrific act of burning bodies in a concentration camp, yet shows a tender side by buying chocolates for his children at a sweet shop. It leaves one wondering: how can such contrasting aspects coexist within a single individual? In the world of ‘Andor’, we come to understand that it is individuals like this who sustain the Empire, with Syril being one example, though he exhibits less overtly violent behavior.

Andor’s series finale premieres Tuesday, May 13 at 9 PM EST/6 PM PST exclusively on Disney+.
