Star Wars is meant for my young daughter, so maybe chill out on the negativity

As a gamer who grew up with the iconic sound of R2-D2’s beeps echoing through my childhood, I must say that Star Wars has been an unparalleled part of my life journey. From creating homemade audiotapes of the dogfight in Return of the Jedi to sharing the excitement of Synara San with my daughter, this franchise has transcended generations and continues to captivate us all.

As a kid, I used to create my personal audiotapes featuring Star Wars scenes, specifically the dogfight fromĀ Return of the Jedi. Now, as a parent, it’s delightful watching my daughter engage with her Synara San action figure fromĀ Star Wars Resistance. It brings me joy to hear her exclaim “It’s Rey” whenever Daisy Ridley appears in any production. Star Wars is all about having fun.

The overall popularity of the franchise stems from it being fun. It’s fun to watch the films and shows. It’s also something you can pass down to the next generation because the stories are universal and have lessons for both young and older audiences. My concern is how a portion of the fanbase now seems to forget that.

As a devotee, I take great pleasure in most of the creations by Disney and Lucasfilm, as their tales carry a timeless appeal. These narratives revolve around a band of virtuous characters overcoming an oppressive empire. With Disney at the helm, this epic story has grown to encompass numerous additional stories and personalities that were initially absent from the initial six movies.

Currently, my little one has developed a deep affection for Ahsoka Tano and Rey Skywalker, and has become quite captivated by the “Young Jedi Adventures.” As for me, I’ve always held a soft spot for Wedge Antilles, but that’s perfectly fine. Regardless of our individual favorites, we both share a deep love for this franchise. It’s incredible how anyone from diverse backgrounds and hailing from different corners of the world can find a character they can resonate with within it.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that some fellow enthusiasts, particularly on YouTube, haven’t been too fond of the recent changes in Star Wars. Yet, the core story remains unaltered, and to my delight, nothing has fundamentally shifted. You see, I was introduced to this galaxy far, far away at the tender age of 5 or 6, just like my daughter. It’s intriguing that she might find herself drawn more to Rey than Wedge, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier about it. This new connection allows us to embark on a shared adventure together, making our Star Wars experience even more special.

She might not be old enough for “Rogue One” just yet, but I’m eager to share the movie with her, particularly the remarkable characters like Jyn Erso and Chirrut Imwe. In essence, the movie follows a common theme of Star Wars: a team of varied individuals undertaking an insurmountable mission and offering hope in the face of darkness.

That’s all Star Wars has ever been, and that’s what it will keep on being going forward.
