Lucasfilm announced this week that its Star Wars Insider magazine will end with its 237th issue in 2026.
Sources within the team suggest the decision was made because the public seemed to be losing interest in the franchise. Many dedicated fans have since voiced their strong disappointment online.
Revelations from the Minds Behind the Canceled Star Wars Insider
The announcement explained the history behind the decision, but didn’t clearly state why it was made. It seems the Star Wars team cancelled the Insider series because fewer people were reading it. Editor Chris Cooper hinted that the internet played a role in the declining interest.

The editor shared that Insider magazine has been a significant part of their Star Wars journey, both as a fan and in their professional life. They’ve enjoyed sharing the Star Wars galaxy with readers over the past eight years. However, the publishing world has changed dramatically since the days of the Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine, and with the shift towards digital content, this marks the end of an era for Star Wars Insider.

Brett Rector of Insider agreed with the editor’s take, and shared his tenured perspective.
I completely agree with Christopher. It’s been the greatest honor of my life to have been editor-in-chief of Insider leading up to the 2005 release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and then to continue editing the magazine for Lucasfilm Publishing for the past nine years. The magazine means a great deal to me – it’s more than just a job.
A Deep Cut Into the Once Legendary Franchise
This popular series began in 1987 as part of the Star Wars Fan Club. Originally, fans voted to name it “Bantha Tracks” in the club magazine’s second issue. Like today’s version, the original newsletter focused on similar themes.

Though it lasted for 35 issues, the Lucasfilm Fan Club magazine quickly replaced this series the same year it started. The new series launched with eye-catching, glossy covers that marked the 10th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope.
After seven years, the newsletter was redesigned and rebranded as Star Wars Insider. This change happened because the franchise was growing and needed to reach a larger audience. Even with the new name, the old logo stayed on the cover for another 22 issues.

Then, in 1994, the premier issue of Star Wars Insider was released, brandishing a vibrant new cover.
Titan recently started selling issue #235 of the comic series, which celebrates the tenth anniversary of The Force Awakens. This special edition includes behind-the-scenes facts about the film’s production and interviews with the actors. Lucasfilm announced it will be available in stores on December 9th.

The final issue of Star Wars Insider, number 237, will be released in early 2026, bringing an end to a long-running publication and marking a significant moment for the Star Wars franchise.
