Star Wars icon Mark Hamill finally reveals if he’s quit franchise after nearly 50 years as Luke Skywalker
Legendary Star Wars actor, Mark Hamill, has at last disclosed his role in the enduring franchise following almost half a century as Luke Skywalker.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my feelings about the 73-year-old legend who first wielded a lightsaber as a Jedi back in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. In an upcoming interview with Willie Geist on Sunday Today, he opened up about the emotional decision to retire his iconic weapon. I can hardly wait to hear more about this momentous occasion from the man himself!
With the news of a fresh Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s character Rey under production, Hamill has disclosed that he won’t reprise his leading role, yet he’s firm in stating that he didn’t resign from the series.
He said: ‘Well, let me say: they haven’t asked me. It’s not like they said, ‘Please come back.’”
‘I don’t want to make a big PR pronouncement like “This is my decision,”‘
What I’m trying to express is that it truly seemed final. All loose ends in my storyline were neatly tied up. In an interesting twist, my character met their end through an overdose of the Force.
In the galaxy far, far away, I had the immense pleasure of witnessing Mark Hamill bring Luke Skywalker to life in the legendary Star Wars trilogy. This epic journey took me through the chilling events of 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back and the triumphant conclusion of 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
He then reprised the role again in 2015’s the Force Awakens.
In the 2017 movie The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker passes away at the end and becomes one with The Force. His role was seemingly played for the last time in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, representing Luke as a spirit.
Hamill expressed that finishing the Skywalker saga opened up opportunities for new experiences within the wider realm of Star Wars.
‘It was a whole new era for them,’ the action star explained.
George Lucas handed them a breathtaking backdrop, spanning an entire galaxy. They have the freedom to create westerns, mysteries, comedies, or even solve ‘whodunits’ within the realm of Star Wars, he stated.
‘And they’re doing so well’ he added. ‘I love Rogue One, Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett.’
In a couple of scenes, Hamill was portrayed as a younger version of Luke Skywalker in both “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” thanks to technology that reduced his age and captured his movements.
‘I had my time,’ he said of his tenure in the ‘galaxy far, far away.’
‘I’m really appreciative, but I’m really looking to the future for all these new projects.’
In late May, Hamill caused quite a stir when he shared with ComicBook.com that he had discarded his robes and under no circumstances would be seen as a spirit without any clothing.

After hearing the response, the BAFTA winner modestly replied, “No one has invited me yet. It wasn’t as if they told me to return.
I’m absolutely thrilled to be witnessing Mark Hamill’s stellar performance in “The Life of Chuck,” a film that graced the big screen this past Friday. In this captivating production, I find myself enamored with his role as the title character’s grandfather, a life that unfolds across the decades through the portrayals of four distinct actors.
He found the story incredibly uplifting and hopeful, with a life-affirming outlook, he noted. Moreover, it subtly imparts the idea that seemingly insignificant moments in our lives can accumulate to carry great importance over time.
Fans can see the full interview with Hamill June 15, Father’s day on Sunday Today.
