Star Wars franchise casts iconic name in extremely unlikely role

As a long-time Star Wars fan who’s seen it all, from the original trilogy to the prequels and the sequels, I must say that the franchise never ceases to surprise me! The way it catapults promising talent into stardom is truly remarkable. And now, with Pedro Pascal’s Mando and Baby Yoda making their way to the big screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement tinged with nostalgia.

The Star Wars series is well-known for featuring prominent figures. It was instrumental in introducing icons like Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill to the world, which isn’t surprising given their enduring popularity. This franchise has a knack for nurturing fresh talent into stars, and it also attracts established stars as well.

One of the classic franchises that has continued to thrive over time is still active today. Although the Skywalker storyline has concluded (and not too long ago), there are yet untold tales set in that distant galaxy. Most of these new stories can be found on the Disney Plus streaming platform, with the initial one, “The Mandalorian“, being particularly well-received. This series played a significant role in propelling Pedro Pascal, an industry veteran, to international stardom.

Currently, Mando and the being he’s tasked with safeguarding, affectionately known as “Baby Yoda” or Grogu, are moving from the small screen to the big one following three seasons. Remarkably, production has managed to attract another prominent contemporary actor for an unconventional part.

Jeremy Allen White joins The Mandalorian and Grogu in unexpected role

According to Variety, Jeremy Allen White, star of “The Bear,” has been added to the cast of “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Specifically, he will voice Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son, in an exciting development for the upcoming film. This is one of the first significant details to emerge about the production, offering a tantalizing glimpse into what fans can expect.

33-year-old White is currently thriving at the pinnacle of his acting career, largely due to his award-winning portrayals in “The Bear,” and his longstanding industry experience is evident. Beyond this, he’s widely recognized for portraying Phillip Gallagher, or “Lip,” in “Shameless” across its 11 seasons. He’s also starred in movies like “After Everything” and “Iron Claw,” and at present, he’s filming the biopic of Bruce Springsteen titled “Deliver Me From Nowhere.

Star Wars franchise casts iconic name in extremely unlikely role

The duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to star in a special fourth season-like episode, stemming from the original series. With the future of Star Wars films uncertain, Lucasfilm opted to present their top Disney Plus characters with a cinematic adventure instead, altering the initial plans for The Mandalorian season 4. As a result, reliable sources now suggest that there won’t be any additional seasons of the show, as Mando and Yoda’s stories have been moved to the big screen.

For the future of the franchise on Disney Plus, it’s yet to be determined. Although The Mandalorian has been a significant triumph for the streaming service, its third season received less favorable reviews compared to the earlier ones. Shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor were created with limited episodes, while The Book of Boba Fett also ended after only one season. Regrettably, even the latest series, The Acolyte, was terminated after just a single season as well.

Moving Pascal’s Din Djarin from the small screen to the big screen carries some risk, but if it rejuvenates the Star Wars franchise to the heights of cinematic achievement like the Skywalker Saga reached, then it will undoubtedly be a worthwhile endeavor. Furthermore, with Jeremy Allen White joining the cast, even in an unexpected role, there’s an increased probability that this outcome may transpire.

The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in movie theaters on May 22, 2026.
