Star Wars director disagrees with fans calling this the best Star Wars movie

We’ve just published a list that ranks the Star Wars movies based on their Rotten Tomatoes scores. Although Rogue One came in fifth place, there are many fans who would argue against this ranking. Perhaps it’s due to the current excitement surrounding Andor, the charm of K-2SO, or the iconic Darth Vader hallway scene – but the enthusiasm for Rogue One remains high.

But its own director—Gareth Edwards—doesn’t buy the hype.

Although I don’t entirely share this viewpoint, I value it greatly and am thankful for kind words. What’s fascinating to note as you continue creating films is that this perspective underscores the long-term impact of a movie, not just its initial reception, but rather how people feel about it decades later.” (Edwards shared this with Business Insider.)

Edwards didn’t express his favorite Star Wars film, though I suspect it might be The Empire Strikes Back. However, he did express a particular fondness for the original trilogy. Perhaps my age is showing, but when combined, they stand out as the finest of the series. Their originality, their music, their revelations – it’s not hard to understand why they’re cherished by…let’s say, the more experienced fans.

Perhaps what makes Star Wars extraordinary is its diversity. Each film offers a unique flavor, ensuring an ongoing sense of tension since they differ significantly from one another. For instance, Rogue One leaned towards war and espionage rather than traditional Star Wars, the prequels were faster-paced compared to the originals, and the sequel trilogy brought a distinct twist. Add to that the numerous shows, games, books, and comics, and you’ll find the Star Wars universe vast and full of variety, catering to diverse tastes.

Visiting a restaurant called Star Wars might seem odd, but it offers a variety of dishes that cater to different tastes. You may not enjoy every item on the menu, but there will be something you’ll find appealing. If you don’t fancy the nachos, go for a burger instead. Preferably, if milkshakes aren’t your thing, give a smoothie a try.

Beyond just directing “Rogue One,” Edwards has also helmed the latest release, “Jurassic World: Dominion.” Despite receiving mixed feedback – Rotten Tomatoes rates it with 52% from critics and a slightly more favorable 72% from fans – it’s thriving at the box office, earning an impressive $318 million during its global debut. It seems that a movie doesn’t need to be exceptional if it features dinosaurs.

Following his latest box office hit as a director, could there be possibilities of Edwards returning to the Star Wars universe?

I can’t get enough of watching them work! That trilogy will forever hold a special place in my heart, yet I’m excitedly looking forward to continuing with my own endeavors.

It seems that the Star Wars universe is missing a director now. No worries, there’s always space for new talents to join in!
