Star Wars Death Star Was Built in 20 Years, Lasted Only Weeks
In the second season of “Andor”, the timeline for the Death Star was revealed in a way that seems incredibly unlikely and significantly alters our perspective of “A New Hope”. Among the specific dates within the Star Wars universe, the timeline presented in “Andor” season 2 is particularly intriguing. Unlike most Star Wars TV shows which unfold over a short period of days or weeks, the second season of “Andor” spans nearly four years, culminating right before the events of “Rogue One”.
During these past four years, crucial details emerged about the Rebel Alliance in Star Wars. Not only was Yavin 4 located and turned into a Rebel stronghold, but significant events such as the Ghorman Massacre and Mon Mothma’s departure from Coruscant transpired. These occurrences paved the way for season 2 of Andor to neatly connect with Rogue One, sparking an intriguing discussion about timelines. Following Andor, it becomes evident how the Death Star’s schedule impacts A New Hope, giving a fresh perspective to the movie.
The Death Star Took 20 Years To Make… & It Didn’t Last A Month
The Death Star Had A Laughably Short Active Life Span
The series Andor underscored that the active lifespan of the Death Star was surprisingly brief, as seen when watching the Star Wars movies sequentially from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith to Rogue One, then to A New Hope. In these films, it’s evident that significant time has elapsed, but Andor skillfully depicted the details of the Death Star’s construction, the scope of its timeline, and the intense efforts the Empire took to bring it online.
In the detailed exploration of the Death Star within Andor, it gives the impression that constructing it over a span of 20 years feels significantly longer than the films have ever conveyed. The closing scenes of season 2 in Andor seamlessly connect to Rogue One, which mirrors this with reference to A New Hope. When considering these three interconnected productions, it’s evident that the Death Star was operational for a brief period, perhaps no more than a few weeks at its longest. After two decades of clandestine work to construct it, the Rebels discovered its true nature, obtained the plans, and launched the attack that ultimately destroyed it in just days or weeks.
The Second Death Star Didn’t Even Get Finished
The Rebels Rubbed Salt In The Wounds Of Palpatine & The Empire
To add a touch of irony to the briefness of life, considering that the Emperor’s wicked schemes, which had been in development for two decades, were brought to an abrupt end within just a few days, the Second Death Star, much like its predecessor, had a tragically short lifespan. In “Return of the Jedi,” it was exposed that the Emperor was covertly constructing a second Death Star, a characteristic of Palpatine’s elaborate contingencies. However, when the Rebels stumbled upon this unfinished project during the Battle of Endor, they launched an assault, effectively reducing its lifespan to zero.
At the Battle of Endor, the Second Death Star was destroyed before it had even begun construction. The original Death Star was built and briefly operational, but the Rebels thwarted Emperor Palpatine’s plans. Later on, his scheme for another planet-destroying weapon was foiled again, this time before it could be fully developed.
Palpatine Would’ve Been Better To Avoid Superweapons Entirely
The Empire’s Evil Functioned Better Without Superweapons
It seems clear from these events that the Empire and Palpatine would have benefited more without the possession of superweapons. After all, the building of the Death Star, the leaking of its plans, and the subsequent desperate attempts to destroy it served as a catalyst for the Rebel Alliance, giving them the drive they needed. Without this impetus, the Empire might have been able to endure longer against the Rebellion.
Consequently, the demolition of the initial Death Star resulted in the loss of millions of Imperial lives and high-ranking officials, including the Emperor. The explosion of the Second Death Star claimed the life of the Emperor, as well as Darth Vader. Had these powerful weapons not existed, the Rebels in Star Wars might not have been driven to such extreme measures. This demonstrates that Palpatine’s arrogance in constructing the Death Stars was his undoing, a fate orchestrated by the spies and saboteurs from Andor.
