Star Wars and Hamilton have more connections between them than you think!
As a gamer who has lived through the golden age of Star Wars and the recent rise of Hamilton, I can confidently say that both phenomena have left indelible marks on our cultural landscape.
comparable to the impact that “Star Wars: A New Hope” made in 1977, the musical play “Hamilton,” penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda, has become a cultural juggernaut. Since its premiere on Broadway in 2015, the performance has indelibly marked music, culture, and entertainment. Interestingly, the play and its participants share connections with the Star Wars saga.
Miranda is deeply connected to the Star Wars universe. In 2015, he penned a song played at Maz Kanata’s cantina in “The Force Awakens,” which pays tribute to John Williams’ Mos Eisley Cantina piece from “A New Hope.” During an interview with SFGATE, Miranda shared his Star Wars writing journey, saying, “Instead of focusing on Moana, I was secretly collaborating with J.J. Abrams on the cantina music for ‘Episode Seven,’ whenever I had a free moment.
In addition to helping create the soundtrack for the festivities on the planet Pasaana in “The Rise of Skywalker,” Miranda was also part of the Star Wars universe in another way. He made a brief appearance as a resistance soldier near the film’s end, having developed a friendship with Abrams after the director watched “Hamilton” in 2015.
Apart from Miranda, Daveed Diggs, who played the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson on Broadway, has also contributed his skills to the Star Wars universe. He provided the voice for Norath Kev in the animated series Star Wars Resistance. Later, Diggs revisited the Star Wars animation world to voice the character Crux in the episode “The Pit” of Season 2 in Star Wars: Visions.
Similar to how Star Wars has grown beyond its original films, Hamilton’s music has developed a life of its own. Just as John Williams’ music from the original trilogy gained popularity, the soundtrack for the play has become a hit album, and fans have been singing and humming each song. Both works received Grammy Awards; John Williams won Grammys for Best Original Score for A New Hope, while Lin-Manuel Miranda won for Hamilton in the category of Best Musical Theater Album.
In the same way that Hamilton is increasingly shaping our society, it has a strong potential to endure alongside Star Wars as a significant influence on pop culture for the foreseeable future. It appears that the coffee mugs in our kitchen cabinet are anticipating a long lifespan.
