Following the release of the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord series, actor Sam Witwer has explained which previous stories will help viewers get the most out of the Star Wars spin-off. Witwer, who provides the voice for the main character in the animated series, also addressed whether new fans can understand the show without extensive knowledge of Star Wars lore.

Sam Witwer on Star Wars lore you need to know before Maul — Shadow Lord

In a recent interview, a former Battlestar Galactica actor shared that you don’t need to be familiar with any previous Star Wars movies or shows to enjoy the new series, Maul — Shadow Lord, created by Dave Filoni.

You know, one thing I really appreciate about this show is how accessible it is. I’ve seen people asking what you need to know about Star Wars beforehand to really get it, if there’s some ‘homework’ involved. But Sam Witwer, who’s fantastic in it, actually said it’s designed so you don’t need any prior knowledge at all! He told MovieWeb they specifically made it so even if you’ve never seen Star Wars or have no idea who Darth Maul is, you can still jump right in and follow everything perfectly. That’s awesome, right? They really wanted to make it for everyone.

Darth Maul first appeared in the Star Wars universe in the 1999 film The Phantom Menace. Though he was seemingly defeated at the end of the movie by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he later reappeared in several animated Star Wars series, most notably The Clone Wars and Rebels.

These projects successfully developed Darth Maul’s backstory, revealing his life on his home world, Dathomir, and his descent into the dark side of the Force.

Following the events of The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord explores Darth Maul’s journey as he builds a criminal empire while staying hidden from the Empire. The show has launched with two episodes now streaming on Disney+, and new episodes will be released every Monday.
