Star Wars actor Daisy Ridley opens up following Graves’ disease diagnosis
As a fan who has followed Daisy Ridley’s career and personal journey with great admiration, I must say her recent revelation about being diagnosed with Graves’ disease is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It’s heartbreaking to learn that this incredible actress, who brings such vibrancy and life to our screens, is battling an autoimmune disorder.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m sharing some personal health news: I’ve recently been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid gland. This means my thyroid is working overtime, producing more hormones than necessary. It’s one of the main causes of hyperthyroidism worldwide. Symptoms I might experience include tremors, fluctuations in weight, and sudden hot flashes, among others.
32-year-old Ridley shared with Women’s Health magazine in a recent interview that she sought advice from an endocrinologist in September of 2023, as she had been experiencing symptoms such as a fast heart rate, weight loss, tiredness, and shaking hands.
At first, the actress from Star Wars believed her condition was due to playing a challenging psychological role in the thriller film titled Magpie, where she portrays Anette – a character who grapples with personal relationships. She mused, “I assumed, ‘Perhaps I’ve just taken on a very stressful part.’ That might be why I don’t feel well,” she stated.
Yet, it was when her doctor described Graves’ disease as a “fatigued yet restless” sensation that Ridley understood her symptoms were linked to the condition.
As a fan, I found myself chuckling, realizing, “Geez, I guess I’ve been feeling frustrated with life as a whole.” But upon reflection, it seems everything around me is operating at such a rapid pace that finding tranquility becomes quite the challenge.
For several years, Ridley has maintained a vegan lifestyle. After receiving a diagnosis, she opted to adopt a gluten-free diet as a proactive step towards managing the disease. Instead of being overly rigid, she’s focusing on minimizing foods that trigger symptoms. She’s noticing positive changes in her health shortly after making these adjustments.
She’s adding infrared saunas, cryotherapy, massages, acupuncture, and other holistic therapies to her daily regimen as part of her commitment to prioritizing her health better. She expressed that it’s become commonplace for women to ignore their feelings and health concerns, often leading to being underdiagnosed or undiagnosed, which she finds concerning. Instead of dismissing symptoms by saying ‘I’m fine’, she emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing them.
In her past, Ridley was diagnosed with both endometriosis and polycystic ovaries. Despite accumulating numerous health problems throughout her life, she draws motivation from contemplating those who face even greater hardships.
In the larger picture, her Graves’ diagnosis is relatively mild compared to what many others experience. Regardless of one’s ability to cope, nobody should have to endure such issues if there’s an alternative. If a problem arises, it shouldn’t mean suffering in silence.
