The series spends two entire episodes following other characters, and much of the remaining five episodes are flashbacks to Boba Fett’s time with the Tusken Raiders. Compared to The Book of Boba Fett, Maul Shadow Lord delivers a more compelling crime story. The animated series shows Maul’s recovery after his defeat in the Siege of Mandalore, as he works to rebuild his Shadow Collective. He gains respect by finding new allies and confronting those who betrayed him, ultimately proving to be a far more effective leader than Boba Fett was in his own series.
The show largely fails because of how it portrays Boba Fett. His characterization is a major disappointment that could permanently damage the reputation of The Mandalorian and the Star Wars series as a whole.

It’s disappointing, considering how beloved Boba Fett was among Star Wars fans. Even years after The Book of Boba Fett aired, his future remains uncertain. The show didn’t perform well, and it’s possible we won’t see this iconic bounty hunter again.
Star Wars Is Finally Learning From Its Mistakes
Following the underwhelming reception of The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars seems to be hitting its stride with Maul – Shadow Lord. This series delivers the gritty crime story it promised, and it doesn’t hold back on the sinister side of the Sith, fully exploring Darth Maul’s training under Darth Sidious. The animated series possesses a level of darkness that The Book of Boba Fett consistently lacked, which ultimately hurt its impact.
What’s truly great is how the show delves into new sides of its central character. Unlike the portrayal of Boba Fett, this series remains true to who Maul is. Instead of facing familiar enemies, Maul encounters even more formidable villains – the Empire and its Inquisitors – who are determined to end his rise to power.
The animated series Maul – Shadow Lord successfully addresses a weakness in previous Star Wars shows: how to portray iconic villains. Instead of trying to make Maul a hero, the series fully embraces his villainous nature.
