Star Trek’s origin film may add to the lore but it also may hurt it

As a long-time Trekkie who’s logged countless hours in the final frontier, I can confidently say that Star Trek: Enterprise holds a special place in my heart. It was like stepping onto the bridge of the USS Enterprise for the first time, only this time it wasn’t Kirk or Picard at the helm but a brave crew setting out to establish the very foundation of the Federation.

“Star Trek: Enterprise might offer the most compelling origin tale for a franchise as extensive as Star Trek. After almost 40 years, and always progressing through the timeline, the franchise’s creators introduced Star Trek: Enterprise with the intention of making it the starting point for everything related to the Federation. The series delved into the origins of the Federation of Planets, Starfleet, their alliances, and the history of long-standing rivalries.”

Although it faced some initial issues and didn’t garner the same level of fandom as The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, or Voyager, Enterprise stood firmly on its own and played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the Star Trek franchise.

Sure, we had a few episodes of past Star Trek shows and even a film that dove into the beginnings of the Federation at a very primal level, but Enterprise was the concept that bound ideas together. Its legacy wasn’t great then, but as time ticks by, the appreciation of the series only grows. It’s a show that is gaining more and more supporters each week it seems.

Despite the ongoing growth and expansion of the Star Trek universe, the emergence of another “origin” tale could potentially disrupt this trend. In the upcoming years, a new movie is slated to be released, focusing on the early days of Starfleet, delving into its inception on Earth. It’s expected that there will be limited appearances of aliens, primarily Vulcans, according to current plans.

The idea could face significant constraints due to the boundaries imposed by the wider universe’s framework. Since it’s challenging to incorporate numerous alien species, ideas, or characters, there might be a need to modify established history in order to fit familiar faces and aliens into the narrative. However, such alterations could potentially tarnish the reputation of Star Trek: Enterprise.

If characters are introduced or events occur that significantly alter the storyline of the show, it could be significant to include Jonathan Archer’s father as a key character or even depict a younger T’Pol. However, any other changes made on Enterprise could potentially impact not only the preceding series but also the subsequent films.

Fans care about the canon and they want the creators to care as much about it as the fans do.
