The final season of Enterprise felt like a tribute to the entire Star Trek franchise, especially The Original Series. Interestingly, it’s the only show from that classic era that didn’t feature any actors from the original cast, despite efforts to make it happen. In fact, William Shatner was very close to appearing in Season 4, and his appearance would have significantly altered the show and the established Star Trek storyline.
Fans used to enjoy a bit of mystery in shows like Star Trek, accepting unanswered questions as part of the story. Now, those same things are often seen as flaws. For example, the classic episode “Mirror, Mirror” left unanswered what happened to people affected by the Tantalus Field, and some fans see that as a mistake. The show Enterprise later tried to resolve that lingering question.
Enterprise Was Different and Initially Kept Its Distance from Canon
When the show initially launched, its creators, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, aimed for a unique feel. Instead of a traditional orchestral introduction, they opted for a different approach.
Season 4, guided by the late Manny Coto, really started to feel like a backstory to the classic Star Trek series. Episodes delved into the histories of Vulcans, the Eugenics Wars, and the evolution of the Klingons. Despite this promising direction, those in charge at Paramount seemed determined to cancel Enterprise.
Despite being the network’s top-rated show, the budget was cut while executives still expected high viewership. To make things work, producer Coto skillfully spread storylines across several episodes. The bridge set from the original Star Trek was reused, but they could only afford it for a limited appearance in two episodes.
Those two episodes came about solely because Paramount allowed Manny Coto to feature William Shatner on Enterprise, letting him play his iconic Mirror Universe version of Captain Kirk. It would have been a landmark moment for Star Trek.
Star Trek: Enterprise Was Going to Answer a Mirror Universe Mystery
The famous “Mirror, Mirror” episode of the original Star Trek featured a unique technology not found in the regular universe. This device, called the Tantalus Field, could make anyone the user aimed it at vanish completely.
On the podcast Inglorious Treksperts, a newly released interview revealed a plan to bring William Shatner onto Enterprise. The idea involved a device called the Tantalus Field, which wouldn’t have been a weapon like a disintegrator. Instead, it would have been a time machine, sending criminals to a hidden prison in the past.
Okay, so here’s the deal – somehow, this penal colony ends up sharing the same universe as the Enterprise NX-01. And get this, Captain Kirk is there, but not the one we know! Apparently, this ‘Spock’ – who’s the bad guy in this timeline – sent him there after leading a revolt against the Terran Empire. It’s wild, and it looks like the rest of…
Coto recounted sharing this story with William Shatner over lunch. He imagined that the heroic crew of the NX-01 would inevitably attempt to liberate the prisoners. Following Spock’s use of the Tantalus Field on Captain Kirk, the usually restrained Kirk would have seized command of the colony. He would then rally the other prisoners to overpower Captain Archer and his crew, taking control of the Enterprise.
This episode was planned to explore the character’s desire for power and expansion. It would have also reintroduced a beloved character and explained the function of the long-enigmatic Tantalus Field. Unfortunately, these plans never came to fruition.
Paramount Blocked William Shatner from Appearing on Star Trek: Enterprise
As their lunch meeting wrapped up, Shatner playfully suggested appearing on the show wouldn’t be free. Although Paramount didn’t accept his initial price request, it wasn’t an unreasonable one.
In an interview, Coto acknowledged the amount was significant, but also noted it was less than he anticipated. He explained that Paramount conducted research which indicated his appearance wouldn’t significantly improve ratings enough to warrant the cost. However, Coto suggested the network wouldn’t have considered any increase in ratings or actor salary worthwhile.
Paramount repeated past errors by undervaluing the Star Trek franchise when new leadership arrived. They seemed focused only on the past, not the future potential of the series. A storyline involving William Shatner would have created a compelling connection between the Mirror Universe and the regular Star Trek timeline.
It’s interesting that this idea was actually touched upon in the first season of Star Trek: Discovery. But beyond how it fits with established lore, it would have been amazing to see William Shatner reprise his role as Captain Kirk and deliver another iconic performance on a starship bridge. He had the talent to take the character anywhere, and it’s a real shame we didn’t get to see that. It’s easily one of the biggest missed opportunities in the entire Star Trek universe.
Despite everything, this loss deeply impacted fans of the series. It wasn’t just about the unanswered questions surrounding Tantalus Field and its victims. More importantly, it meant missing a final appearance by William Shatner as Captain Kirk – a unique portrayal of the character that fans had only witnessed once in fifty years.
Paramount may be repeating a past error. In addition to featuring returning cast members from the original Next Generation shows, the series produced by Alex Kurtzman also brought back Walter Koenig, an actor from the very first Star Trek series, for a voice role as the Federation president in the final episode of Picard.
You can watch all of Star Trek: Enterprise on DVD, Blu-ray, or streaming. It’s available digitally and on Paramount+, along with the other Star Trek series and movies.
