Star Trek: The Next Generation had the idea to bring back Khan

As a devoted Trekkie who has spent countless hours immersed in the Star Trek universe, I must say that the prospect of Khan Noonien Singh returning to challenge Captain Picard in an episode of The Next Generation is nothing short of exhilarating. Imagine the rich dialogue and character development between two iconic captains, each embodying their own unique leadership styles, facing off against one another on the bridge of the Enterprise.

In the iconic series “Star Trek: The Original Series,” Captain Kirk [portrayed by William Shatner] encountered a formidable adversary named Khan Noonien Singh, played masterfully by Ricardo Montalban. Unlike many villains, Khan aspired not for global domination but for control across the cosmos. Naturally, he was vanquished by Kirk and banished to Ceti Alpha V along with his military unit and new spouse. However, the planet eventually turned barren, causing the loss of Khan’s wife, leaving him and his team struggling to survive. This backstory unfolded before the events of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

In a different version of Star Trek: The Next Generation that wasn’t shown on screen, Khan (Ricardo Montalban) was planned to make an appearance in Captain Picard’s world. This idea came from writer and director Marc Bernardin, who worked as an intern during the early stages of the series. According to Bernardin, he proposed this concept because Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was worried about his crew’s downtime between planets due to long travel times. He felt it was important for his team to stay sharp, and he discussed his concerns with Data [Brent Spiner].

In a nutshell, everyone is aware that Data is skilled at resolving issues. Not long after, the Enterprise finds itself under attack – surprisingly, this aggressor turns out to be none other than Khan. He successfully weakens the ship for an epic showdown with Captain Picard. This encounter would have given viewers a glimpse of how Picard tackles Kirk’s most formidable adversary. However, it transpired that this wasn’t an authentic battle since Data had devised it as a simulation on the holodeck to keep the crew engaged during leisure time. Thus, Ricardo Montalban made his appearance, but the Khan we saw wasn’t the genuine article.
