Star Trek: The Next Generation guest star, Jill Jacobson, dies at 70
As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Star Trek universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of loss upon hearing about the passing of Jill Jacobson. Known for her memorable roles on both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, she was more than just an actress to us fans; she was a fellow explorer of the final frontier.
It’s been reported by Deadline that Jill Jacobson, who appeared as Vanessa in Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s second season episode “The Royale” and Aroya in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “Broken Link,” has passed away at the age of 70. Known for her extensive acting career, Jacobson made her debut as Sherri in the 1977 slasher horror film Nurse Sherri. Over the years, she continued to act until 2020, with her final onscreen role being a bartender in Etheria. Currently, she has another project, Merrily, in production and set for release in November 2025.
Her family shared that she was beautiful, full of energy, and remained optimistic until the very end. Her many relatives, friends, and cherished dogs Benny and Kowalski will greatly miss her.
Beyond her role on “New Gidget,” Jill Jacobson is also a stand-up comedian who has showcased her skills at renowned venues like The Improv and The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. Her close, lifelong friend and co-star from “New Gidget,” Caryn Richman, praised her comic timing, stating it was exceptional.
This year, the actress opened up about her 2.5-year fight against esophageal cancer in a nearly two-hour conversation with Jim Masters on The Jim Masters’ Show. During this discussion, Jacobson described the ordeal as extremely challenging, stating, “What I experienced was incredibly tough. You basically can’t do anything; you just can’t. Now, I feel so grateful, and all I want to do is continue living and assist others. It gives you a strong desire to help people.
She took up the role of an advocate for the American Cancer Society, earning accolades for her contributions. Dan Harary, her friend and publicist, reported that she passed away on December 8 at the Culver West Health Center in Culver City, California. At the time, she was battling a prolonged illness.
As a passionate follower of Red Shirts Always Die, I offer my heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of the dearly departed Jill Jacobson. May her soul find eternal peace.
