Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wants to run into the Original Series, but should they?
As a devoted Star Trek enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that Strange New Worlds has been nothing short of a revelation. It’s a delightful blend of the old and the new, a testament to the timeless appeal of this iconic franchise. Yet, like any good captain, I’ve had to navigate through the occasional turbulence that comes with any Star Trek series.
Since its debut, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has proven to be a resounding success. This series now serves as the standard by which all contemporary Star Trek productions are judged, skillfully blending a fresh perspective for the franchise while keeping long-time fans engaged. Given that these established fans constitute the majority of the fanbase, it’s crucial not to neglect them during efforts to attract new viewers. By doing so, the show creators aim to ensure the longevity of the franchise for future generations.
Although Strange New Worlds has garnered much success and critical acclaim, it’s not without its flaws. Just like all Star Trek shows, it sometimes stumbles. However, what sets it apart is its commitment to upholding and respecting the established lore, surpassing other series in this regard.
It’s surprising when series co-creator Akiva Goldsman mentioned his plans to guide Strange New Worlds towards the era of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s, often referred to as “The Original Series” or “TOS”. Essentially, he aims to move the show into the same timeframe as the original series.
“Left to our own devices, which really means if Paramount will, we’ll keep going into the TOS era. And we know how. That’s the hope, but as Henry said, nothing is assured. So we come from a conservative place with great aspirations.”
In simpler terms, it seems that Goldsman might be hinting at concluding the series in a way similar to where the original Star Trek (TOS) began. This is based on Henry Alonso Myers’ previous comments about wanting the show to end.
In a different way of saying it, he might be suggesting that he plans to draw increasingly from the initial series to link the shows more closely, similar to how Strange New Worlds revitalized the concept of the Gorn (from TOS).
There’s some uncertainty about whether this might disrupt the flow of the storyline, but we really hope it won’t change things too significantly.
