Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Debuts First Look After Divisive Season 3

The show concluded its third season in September, and production on a new installment is underway. Although Season 3 received mixed reactions from viewers, a recently released clip hints at thrilling developments for Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

A preview of the new season of *Strange New Worlds* was shown at New York Comic Con on October 11th. The almost five-minute clip hinted at what’s to come, featuring the *Enterprise* encountering a space storm that quickly leads to trouble.

The scene opens with a close-up of Captain Pike watching an approaching storm. He instructs Lieutenant Ortegas to maintain a safe distance, and she playfully acknowledges his order. Lieutenant Noonien-Singh expresses her fascination with the storm’s beauty, while Ensign Uhura shares her wonder. A new Vulcan character responds by stating a preference for factual data over aesthetic appreciation.

While investigating the storm, Uhura detects a distress signal originating from within it. “Sir, I’m receiving a mayday call,” she reports. Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley asks if a ship is caught in the storm, and Uhura confirms that’s what the signal indicates. As the *Enterprise* approaches, they discover the signal is actually coming from a Starship distress buoy.

The Enterprise is then caught in a growing storm, leaving it stranded and powerless in space. Spock (Ethan Peck) informs the crew that, thankfully, life support is still functioning, but the warp drive, communications, and transporters are all down.

Season 3 Ended with a Sacrifice

Although a specific release date for *Strange New Worlds* Season 4 wasn’t announced, the preview ended with a promise that it’s “coming soon.” The story will continue with a dramatic event: a character making the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity after the *Enterprise* comes face-to-face with the villainous Vezda.

This episode reveals that Batel is fated to guard the prison holding the Vezda. Before accepting this lifelong commitment, she shows Captain Pike a vision of the happy life they could have shared if she hadn’t taken on this duty and he hadn’t been injured.

Despite generally positive reviews, the latest season of *Strange New Worlds* has received much lower ratings from viewers compared to earlier seasons. While critics gave Season 3 a strong 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score was only 52%. This is a significant drop from the 81% audience score for Season 1 and 77% for Season 2. Critics also rated the first two seasons highly, with 99% for Season 1 and 77% for Season 2. Some viewers have criticized the new season for feeling different in tone and not fully developing its characters.

The first three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount+.
