Paramount+ plans to continue the story of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew for just two more seasons, concluding the adventures before Captain James T. Kirk takes command. Starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the fourth season is expected to arrive in 2026 and will follow the crew as they explore the galaxy “seeking out new life and new civilizations.”
Season 4 of the show has finished filming and is now in post-production. We spoke with co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman at New York Comic Con to get a preview of the upcoming seasons. Goldsman, who shares showrunning responsibilities with Henry Alonso Myers on *Strange New Worlds*, says Seasons 4 and 5 will have a tighter, more focused storyline.
According to Goldsman, they’re currently working on Season 5 and aiming for a core *Star Trek* experience. He explained that starting with Season 4 and continuing into Season 5, the show will focus more tightly on science fiction, action, adventure, and emotional stories. They’re moving away from more unusual storylines to create a focused farewell to the characters and the audience.
As a big fan of the series, I’m really glad to hear they’re planning to take things in a more adventurous direction. Honestly, Season 3 felt a little off, and the numbers seem to agree – it got the lowest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes so far. Right now, *Strange New Worlds* Season 3 is sitting at a 52% audience score with over 500 reviews, which definitely shows people weren’t as thrilled with it as previous seasons.
Season 4 Was Teased at New York Comic Con
I was totally hooked at the Star Trek Universe panel at Comic Con when they showed a clip from Season 4! It featured the *U.S.S. Enterprise* flying right into a massive space storm. Things went south fast – the ship ended up completely disabled, adrift in space with only life support functioning. No warp drive, no transporters, and absolutely no way to communicate with anyone. It looks like they’re in serious trouble!
The show had a brief moment in the top 10 of Nielsen’s streaming charts when Season 3 began, but it didn’t stay there for long. It quickly disappeared from the rankings, and even the season finale, “New Life and New Civilizations,” which launched the week of September 8th, didn’t appear in the top 10 for original streaming programs.
Many *Star Trek* fans felt that Season 3 didn’t focus enough on exploring space. One viewer pointed out that even *Deep Space Nine*, which primarily took place on a space station, still managed to include more exploration. As of now, there’s no announced release date for Season 4 of *Strange New Worlds*.
The first three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount+.
