Star Trek: Strange New Worlds needs to bring aboard this Starfleet officer

As a long-time Trekkie with memories of countless intergalactic voyages etched deep within my neural pathways, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the enigmatic character of Thira Sidhu, who graced our screens in 2019’s Star Trek: Short Treks. A young cadet with dreams as vast as the cosmos, she found herself in a precarious yet captivating situation that showcased her mettle and determination.

2019 saw the airing of an episode titled “Ask Not” from Star Trek: Short Treks. This episode featured a young cadet named Thira Sidhu finding herself in a challenging predicament. She was assigned to watch over Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), who was allegedly involved in mutiny. With the Tholians attacking outside, they debated regulations while trying to assert their authority. However, it was later revealed that the entire scenario was simulated, meant to test Sidhu’s resilience. Following this simulation, Captain Pike promised her he would cross paths with her again, but since then, neither he nor she has appeared in the series.

Previously introduced on Short Treks was a captivating new character named Sidhu, portrayed by Amrit Kaur. This young, unsure individual aspired to serve on the Enterprise but initially faced rejection. Despite this challenge, she proved herself worthy even when interacting with her superiors. Now, five years have passed and it’s possible that Sidhu is still a member of the crew serving on the Enterprise. It would be intriguing to find out where her courage has led her since then.

Furthermore, given her ability to stand her ground and fulfill her responsibilities with equal measure, she’d make a superb fit within Captain Pike’s confidants. She could offer constructive criticism when necessary and serve as a guide for fresh recruits joining the starship.

In a short span of time, Short Treks successfully developed an intriguing character, but it’s disappointing that she didn’t get more screen time given the numerous opportunities for her to face new challenges onboard the Enterprise. Strange New Worlds already features powerful female characters, and it would be fantastic to introduce another who could serve as a mentor or guide for the newer ensigns while also interacting with the seasoned Starfleet officers accustomed to their senior roles.
