Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – How Old Are Kirk & Co.

The show titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is gradually bringing together the future crew of the USS Enterprise, led by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Here’s their age as they serve under Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on his Enterprise. “Strange New Worlds” serves as a follow-up to the original pilot episode of “Star Trek,” entitled “The Cage,” and a prelude to “Star Trek: The Original Series.” This series is a captivating blend of characters from “Star Trek,” some of whom will eventually leave the Enterprise, while others will remain when command of the starship transitions from Pike to Kirk.

Moving forward from where Star Trek: Discovery season 2 concludes, we find ourselves in the year 2259 with the debut of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . As we wrap up Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, approximately a year has elapsed, taking us into the year 2260. With Ensign Nyota Uhura’s (Celia Rose Gooding) hair growing longer and a glimpse in the season 3 teaser trailer of a sign commemorating the United Federation of Planets’ centennial, it’s reasonable to expect that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will leap ahead to the year 2261.

In the world of Star Trek, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is set approximately 4-5 years prior to the start of Star Trek: The Original Series. Unlike other seasons, the passage of time in Strange New Worlds isn’t strictly tied to a yearly schedule, but rather adjusts flexibly based on the needs of the series. As part of the crew of Captain Pike’s Enterprise in season 3, several characters who will later serve under Captain Kirk on his Enterprise are currently aboard. Here’s an estimate of their ages compared to those in Star Trek: The Original Series.

6. Lieutenant James T. Kirk

Born In 2233 In Iowa

In the third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Lieutenant James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) is 28 years old. This character was born in the year 2230 in Iowa, and he enrolled in Starfleet Academy in 2252. In season 2 of this series, Lt. Kirk rose to the position of First Officer on the USS Farragut, making him the youngest Number One in Starfleet, breaking a record previously held by his father, Lieutenant George Kirk. Additionally, there is a complex dynamic between Jim and Carol Marcus, who is pregnant with their son, David.

In the year 2265, James T. Kirk assumes command of the Enterprise at the age of 32, earning him the title of one of the youngest starship captains within Starfleet. In “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Jim joined the crew of the Starship Enterprise to learn from Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and gain insights as a First Officer, while also reuniting with his older brother, Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte). As the series progressed into its second season, Jim developed feelings for Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), and it was Ensign Uhura who facilitated his introduction to Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck).

5. Lieutenant Spock

Born In 2230 On Vulcan

In the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Lieutenant Spock has reached the age of 31. Born to Ambassador Sarek (Mark Lenard, James Frain) and Amanda Grayson (Jane Wyatt, Mia Kirshner), this half-Vulcan and half-human character began his service on the USS Enterprise as a Science Officer in 2254, making him a crew member for approximately 7 years. In the upcoming season, Spock holds the position of Chief Science Officer aboard the ship.

In my perspective as a fan, when Captain Kirk assumes command of the Starship Enterprise, Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), around the age of 35, continues his service aboard in dual roles as First Officer and Science Officer. At this point, Kirk and Spock’s enduring friendship is still developing, but it will be nurtured and strengthened through the events of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. Together, they will spend the next 30 years navigating the cosmos on the USS Enterprise, and their final mission together will be depicted in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 2293.

4. Ensign Nyota Uhura

Born In 2237 In Kenya

Following a time leap in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Ensign Nyota Uhura finds herself at the age of 24. She initially joined the crew of the USS Enterprise as an exceptionally talented Starfleet Academy cadet during the first season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Throughout the series, she gained experience in various departments and received engineering guidance from the late Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak). However, Uhura’s true passion lies on the Enterprise’s bridge, where she eventually secured a position as Communications Officer upon her promotion to Ensign during the second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In “Star Trek: The Original Series,” Lt. Uhura, portrayed by Nichelle Nichols, holds the Communications Officer position on Captain Kirk’s Enterprise from around age 28. For the following three decades, she continues her service aboard the Enterprise. Her final mission as part of Captain Kirk’s crew is in “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

3. Nurse Christine Chapel

Birthdate Unknown

Star Trek, despite debuting Nurse Christine Chapel as early as 1966, has yet to disclose the specific details of her birthplace or date of birth. In the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Christine Chapel (portrayed by Jess Bush) is a former Klingon War veteran who innovated Starfleet’s technology for transforming humans into different alien species through surgery. Serving alongside Dr. Joseph M’Benga (played by Babs Olusanmokun) in the USS Enterprise’s medical bay, Nurse Chapel grapples with her romantic feelings towards Lt. Spock and her professional ambitions in archaeological medicine.

In the classic TV series, “Star Trek: The Original Series,” Nurse Chapel continues her service on Captain Kirk’s spaceship, the Starship Enterprise, alongside Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley). Later in the 2270s, she earns the title of doctor as portrayed in “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” However, she is relieved of her duties as Chief Medical Officer by Dr. McCoy at Admiral Kirk’s behest. It’s possible that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3” may reveal more about Nurse Chapel’s background, including her age and birthplace.

2. Lieutenant Montgomery Scott

Born In 2222 In Scotland

In the timeline of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, set in 2261, Martin Quinn, who portrays Lt. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, surprisingly appears to be 39 years old. However, in real life, Quinn is just 31. This means that the character of Scotty is being depicted as younger than his age suggests. It’s worth noting that Scotty was introduced as a member of the USS Stardiver crew in the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and later joins the crew of the USS Enterprise after his previous ship was destroyed by the Gorn.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Scott (played by James Doohan), who was approximately 43 or 44 years old when he took on the role of Chief Engineer under Captain James T. Kirk, develops a deep affection for the Starship Enterprise. This love is so profound that Scotty finds it difficult to take time off and leave the ship. The upcoming season 3 will highlight the initial collaboration between Lieutenants Kirk and Scotty, demonstrating their strong compatibility as a team.

1. Dr. Joseph M’Benga

Born In 2233 In Kenya

In the year 2161 when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ third season unfolds, Dr. Joseph M’Benga is already 38 years old. A former Klingon War veteran with a troubled past as a Starfleet assassin, he now serves as Chief Medical Officer aboard the Starship Enterprise. His family includes a wife named Debra and a daughter, Rukiya (portrayed by Sage Arrindell and Makambe Simamba), who was gravely ill from an incurable disease before she underwent a transformation within the Jonsian Nebula.

In the USS Enterprise, Dr. M’Benga leaves before Captain Kirk assumes command, with Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy taking over as Kirk’s Chief Medical Officer. However, we see Dr. M’Benga, a Vulcan physiology expert portrayed by Booker Bradshaw, in two episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series when he’s around 40 years old. Prior to this, Dr. M’Benga continues as Captain Pike’s preferred Chief Medical Officer in the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
