Be warned, this contains spoilers for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 3, “Vitus Reflux.” In the episode, Chancellor Kelrec (Raoul Bhaneja) proves that even Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) isn’t an expert at everything. Kelrec leads the War College, which now trains officers for the United Federation of Planets after the devastating event known as The Burn, replacing the original Starfleet Academy.
In the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Starfleet Academy and the War College now share a campus. This close proximity quickly led to rivalry between the two schools. The third episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy featured an escalating conflict between cadets from both schools, including competitive Calica matches and a full-blown prank war.
The heads of Starfleet Academy and the War College unexpectedly got involved in a prank war between their students. Chancellor Kelec misused his power to help his cadets tamper with a recruitment advertisement, intending to embarrass Starfleet Academy. When Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) challenged him about it, she quickly discovered his unusual habit: a strong obsession with tea.
Chancellor Kelrec’s Tea Obsession In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Makes Picard Look Like An Amateur
In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Commander Lura Thok (played by Gina Yashere) resigned from her position as Chancellor Kelrec’s second-in-command, partly due to his intense obsession with tea. The show reveals just how dedicated Kelrec is to tea during a scene in episode 3 when Captain Ake visits him. His passion for tea isn’t just a casual preference—it’s incredibly detailed and specific.
Using the right tools and techniques is essential. You need fresh or dried leaves and water heated to a very high temperature – 864 degrees Celsius, to be exact. A single mistake can ruin the flavor, resulting in a weak brew. And forget about clinking glasses! If you absolutely have to stir, gently move the spoon back and forth from the 12 o’clock to the 6 o’clock position, repeating this twelve times.
While Captain Jean-Luc Picard is well-known for his love of tea in Star Trek, Commander Kelrec actually knows far more about it. Picard’s famous request – “Tea, Earl Grey, hot” – is iconic, but it seems to be the only thing he knows about tea, even though he’s enjoyed drinking it for years.
Captain Picard is perfectly happy with tea made by the ship’s replicators. However, Commander Kelrec is a much more serious tea enthusiast. We first see this in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, where it’s clear Kelrec has much higher standards than Picard. While Chancellor Ake admired a collection of old teapots, Kelrec even has special storage built just for his teas, making Picard seem like a beginner by comparison.
Picard Was Starfleet Academy Chancellor, Like Holly Hunter’s Captain
It’s easy to overlook the fact that, similar to Captain Nahla Ake, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard also served as Chancellor of Starfleet Academy at the start of the 25th century. He held this position throughout seasons 2 and 3 of Star Trek: Picard.
It seems Captain Picard may have used his influence to help his son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), quickly finish Starfleet Academy in just one year and earn a position as an Ensign on the USS Enterprise-G at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3. Jack himself acknowledged that his fast track was likely due to his father’s position.
After years of service, Admiral Picard was comfortable around students when he became Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, though perhaps not as naturally as Chancellor Ake in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Chancellor Kelrec, however, quickly showed he was a much bigger tea enthusiast than Picard. Kelrec considered the classic order of “Tea, Earl Grey, hot” to be outdated, a preference from the 24th century.
