‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Offers the Franchise a Unique Way Forward

The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ended on a decent note, but the best episodes were definitely earlier in the season. Although it wasn’t flawless, the show showed a lot of potential. Despite some mixed reactions from fans, Season 2 has already finished filming and is scheduled to be released in 2027. It’s currently uncertain if the Paramount+ series will be renewed beyond that, but it really should be. Starfleet Academy is uniquely positioned to move the Star Trek universe forward, rather than simply repeating familiar storylines.

For years, fans have wondered what it’s like to train to become a Starfleet officer. Previously, we’ve only gotten glimpses of cadet life through quick scenes and brief explanations. Now that a show focusing on Starfleet Academy is finally being made, some viewers are disappointed with how it’s been done, particularly the choice to set it in the 32nd century of Star Trek. However, this controversial setting is actually what will make the show relevant and successful for a long time. And there’s another good reason for its potential, too.

Reason #1: ‘Starfleet Academy Takes ‘Star Trek’ Into the Start of the 33rd Century

Paramount+

The show Star Trek: Discovery jumped its characters forward to the 32nd century at the end of its second season, establishing a new timeline. This era is marked by instability, as a catastrophic event called the Burn left many communities struggling to survive. By the time Starfleet Academy begins, the worst of the Burn is over, and the Federation is starting to rebuild its influence. The first season of Starfleet Academy ends with a quick look into the future, revealing that Sandro Rosta’s character, Caleb Mir, and his classmates will graduate in 3196 – just a few years before the start of the new century.

Since the ship Discovery arrived in the 32nd century towards the end of the 3100s, much of that time period remains a mystery. Instead of creating stories to fill in the details of the events known as ‘The Burn,’ Star Trek seems eager to focus on the new century. Currently, we’ve only seen a brief look at the 3200s in the final episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, showing Michael Burnham many years after the main story. The new characters at Starfleet Academy will be just starting their careers as the 33rd century begins, offering a fresh start for viewers.

Reason #2: ‘Starfleet Academy’ Offers Something No Other ‘Star Trek’ Show Has Pulled Off

Paramount+

We typically only see certain periods in the Starfleet careers of Star Trek characters. For instance, while Patrick Stewart is well-known as Jean-Luc Picard in The Next Generation, the show Picard revisits him much later in life. No character has ever been shown consistently from their very first days at Starfleet Academy, throughout their service, and into retirement. Lower Decks gets fairly close to this, but it skips over their training and ends before they reach higher ranks.

Starfleet Academy has set up the characters nicely for many future stories. The show could easily follow them for decades after they graduate, even with some time skips to catch up. While the current plan is for four seasons, covering their time at the Academy, it would make sense to continue the series in the 33rd century.

The most exciting part of this concept is that after graduation, cadets would likely end up on different ships. This allows for a storytelling style similar to Game of Thrones, with multiple, ongoing plotlines. For example, we could follow Caleb’s experiences as an engineer on one ship in one storyline, while Genesis (Bella Shepherd) pursues her dream of becoming a captain on another. It would be fantastic for Star Trek, and it’s surprising no one has tried this approach before.

‘Starfleet Academy’ Season 2 Needs To Be a Hit To Increase the Chances of ‘Star Trek’s Continued Existence

Paramount+

While it’s exciting to imagine the future of Star Trek, it’s worth remembering that there aren’t any shows currently being filmed. Seasons four and five of Strange New Worlds and season two of Starfleet Academy are finished and will be released soon, but after that, things are quiet. This is the first time in over ten years that the franchise has paused like this. Given that some of the newer shows have received mixed reactions, it’s understandable that Paramount is taking a step back to re-evaluate its plans.

While Strange New Worlds is clearly performing better, Starfleet Academy does have its fans. Continuing Strange New Worlds with Star Trek: Year One makes a lot of sense, and I believe a future season of Starfleet Academy set in the 33rd century would also be a good idea. However, that seems unlikely. Unless Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 gains more popularity, it might be the show’s last, and Strange New Worlds alone may not be enough to sustain this current phase of Star Trek.
