Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Finds Streaming Success on Paramount+

The show got off to a rocky start with its first season, and didn’t perform well on streaming platforms initially. However, things are looking up now, as it’s recently gained popularity and is finding success with viewers.

According to FlixPatrol, Starfleet Academy is now the most popular show on Amazon Channels in the US, UK, and Germany. It’s also performing well on Paramount+, reaching the top 3 in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. The show is currently at No. 6 in the UK and No. 8 in Canada. These numbers are encouraging and suggest that more people are tuning in as the first season comes to a close.

Starfleet Academy Will Have a Second Season

The first season will have ten episodes, with the finale airing on March 12th, following the ninth episode’s release on March 5th. Whether the show gets a second season depends on if viewership numbers increase – something Paramount is hoping for. While Paramount was initially optimistic, the series didn’t attract a large audience and received negative reviews, including reports of coordinated negative reviews upon its release.

Despite mixed initial reactions, Starfleet Academy has generally been well-received by critics, boasting an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While opinions are divided – reflected in its 50% audience score – the show’s success will ultimately depend on how many people continue watching. Strong viewership between now and Season 2 could significantly increase the likelihood of a third season, as another early renewal isn’t guaranteed.

Starfleet Academy Has Been Criticized for Being “Woke”

Set in the 32nd century, Starfleet Academy introduces a new group of cadets as they begin their training to become Starfleet officers. The series stars Nahla Ake as the captain of the USS Athena, alongside a diverse cast including Sandro Rosta, Karim Diane, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Oded Fehr, Gina Yashere, Tig Notaro, and Paul Giamatti. Fans will also be excited to see Robert Picardo return as the Doctor, his beloved character from Star Trek: Voyager.

It’s funny looking back, but when Star Trek: Voyager first aired, some people actually called it ‘too politically correct’ – what we’d now call ‘woke.’ This observation was made on X while defending the diversity shown at Starfleet Academy, which has recently faced criticism online.

You can now watch Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+. The final episode of the season will be available starting March 12th.
