Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has a chance to succeed where Star Trek: Discovery fell short. Currently receiving positive reviews (Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set in the year 3195 and continues the story of Star Trek: Discovery, taking place four years after that show’s finale.
The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, wouldn’t exist without the success of Star Trek: Discovery. Discovery, starring Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), showed how the United Federation of Planets was rebuilt from a difficult starting point, paving the way for the adventures of a new generation of cadets.
The history of Starfleet and the Federation is central to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The USS Athena within the game is full of nods to famous figures from Starfleet’s past. However, a key character from Star Trek has been absent in the 32nd century setting, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has the opportunity to bring them back.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Can Finally Show The 32nd Century’s USS Enterprise
The game Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will at last reveal the USS Enterprise as it appears in the 32nd century. While the Enterprise remains the flagship of the United Federation of Planets, fans have long been curious about its future design and its new registration number following the classic “NCC-1701”.
The first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery featured the 23rd-century starship USS Enterprise, leading to the creation of the spin-off series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery also included references to other versions of the Enterprise.
In the sixth episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, titled “Stormy Weather,” Saru (Doug Jones) mentioned that the USS Enterprise had experienced a subspace rift much like the one affecting the USS Discovery, and also detected unusually hot plasma. He was likely referring to the Enterprise from the 32nd century, not an earlier version of the ship.
Despite being set in the 32nd century, Star Trek: Discovery didn’t feature the USS Enterprise from that era. Instead, viewers saw the USS Voyager-J, a next-generation version of Captain Kathryn Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) original starship. This new Voyager was chosen to test the Federation’s latest technology: the Pathway Drive, a replacement for traditional warp drive.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Can Show Many Versions Of The Starship Enterprise
Besides the USS Enterprise from the 32nd century, there might be other versions of the famous starship still in existence, and the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could reveal them all. Star Trek: Picard season 3 showed us the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime, which may have remained intact through the catastrophic event known as The Burn and continued into the 32nd century.
The Fleet Museum on Athan Prime, in the 25th century depicted in Star Trek: Picard, displayed three historic starships: the refitted NX-01 Enterprise captained by Jonathan Archer, the USS Enterprise-A under James T. Kirk, and the USS Enterprise-D commanded by Jean-Luc Picard.
If the Fleet Museum and the starships within it had survived the devastating event known as The Burn, future versions of the Starship Enterprise – such as the USS Enterprise-F and Captain Seven of Nine’s USS Enterprise-G – might have been added to its collection by the 32nd century, alongside the earlier models.
In season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, the alternate reality ship ISS Enterprise from the 23rd-century Mirror Universe appeared in the main Star Trek timeline. It was taken to Federation headquarters, and it’s possible the ship will eventually be displayed at the Fleet Museum.
I’ve been seeing some amazing ideas online about a potential Star Trek: Starfleet Academy story! Apparently, people are imagining the cadets getting into a bit of trouble and… well, commandeering multiple versions of the Enterprise from the Fleet Museum. It sounds wild, but honestly, I’m completely hooked by the concept!
Even if it doesn’t happen, it would be great if Star Trek: Starfleet Academy finally showed us the 32nd-century USS Enterprise and who its captain is.
