Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Cadet Job Prospects Revealed

Here’s a look at the kinds of roles the cadets from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are most likely to fill after graduation, when they’re assigned to starships. The series focuses on seven promising cadets who represent the future of Starfleet in the 32nd century, following the devastating event known as The Burn. One cadet, Tarima Sadal (played by Zoë Steiner), initially began her training at the War College before transferring to Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the story of the graduating class of 3196. These cadets are unique because they’re the first in over a century to train at the original Starfleet Academy campus in San Francisco. This happened after a catastrophic event called The Burn caused Earth to separate from the United Federation of Planets. The Academy’s students represent many different species – one cadet, Kerrice Brooks, is even made of light – but they all possess the potential to become great Starfleet officers.

Unfortunately, the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season, leaving the cadets’ time at Starfleet Academy unfinished. Producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau have hinted that season 2 will show the cadets changing and some even shifting their career paths from their original plans.

Now that the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished, and knowing what we do about the cadets, here’s a look at where they’re most likely to end up as Starfleet Officers after graduation.

7. Ocam Sadal: Communications Officer

Ocam Sadal, also known as Romeo Carere, quickly became a popular character on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He’s the brother of Tarima Sadal and, like her, is a Betazoid. However, unlike his sister, Ocam doesn’t possess strong psychic abilities. He describes himself as a “joiner”—someone who boosts the morale of those around him with his positive attitude and quirky sense of humor.

Honestly, I think Communications Officer would be perfect for Ocam. They’re just one of those people everyone likes, and that really matters in a role like that. It’d let them be the central hub of information on a starship, a bit like Nyota Uhura is on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – she’s amazing! I can totally see Ocam being that reliable voice the captain and crew depend on, someone they genuinely trust to keep the lines open.

6. Darem Reymi: Helmsman

Darem Reymi, also known as George Hawkins, is actually a member of Khionian royalty. He started at Starfleet Academy intending to become a captain and quickly established himself as a prominent figure. A big part of his desire to command a starship stemmed from wanting to earn his parents’ approval. However, in the third episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Darem discovered that he wasn’t naturally suited for leadership.

The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ends with a different possibility for Darem, who proved to be a skilled pilot of the USS Athena’s saucer section. Commander Jett Reno recognized his talent and thinks he’d excel as a pilot. Being a helmsman is a good fit for Reymi, and, like Hikaru Sulu, it could still lead to Darem becoming a Captain in the future.

5. Tarima Sadal: Chief Of Security

Tarima Sadal is a Betazoid with incredibly strong psychic abilities that she’s still developing. Rather than attending Starfleet Academy, she decided to study at the War College to gain a different set of skills. She’s also a gifted athlete – she can even dunk a basketball without looking!

Considering Tarima’s unique abilities and surprising strength, she’d be a great fit as a starship’s Chief of Security. While she might not be physically imposing, her psychic powers make her incredibly effective. As seen with Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a small, capable Security Chief can be a powerful asset.

4. Jay-Den Kraag: Chief Medical Officer

Jay-Den Kraag, also known as Karim Diané, entered Starfleet Academy determined to become a doctor. Shortly after joining the USS Athena, he found himself needing to save the life of seriously injured Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere) in the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

It seems Jay-Den Kraag is destined to become a starship’s Chief Medical Officer. He’s a remarkably sensitive and caring individual, and despite being Klingon, he’s a more gentle doctor than many in Starfleet. Unless he changes his career path in the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, becoming Dr. Jay-Den Kraag feels inevitable.

3. Caleb Mir: Chief Engineer

For fifteen years, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) lived on his own, navigating the galaxy before Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) brought him to Starfleet Academy. During that time, he learned to survive by his wits outside of Federation territory. He also inherited a natural talent and technical skill from his incredibly intelligent mother, Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany).

Throughout the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Caleb consistently proved he has the skills to be a starship’s Chief Engineer. He showed his engineering talent by successfully reprogramming security holograms at the Academy, fixing damaged plasma coils on the USS Athena, and even expertly hacking into SAM’s holographic system. Caleb is a remarkably gifted engineer who often makes complex tasks seem easy.

2. Series Acclimation Mil (SAM): First Officer & Science Officer

Before appearing in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Mil was already designated as the representative of her people, the Kasqians. This updated version of Mil, known as SAM, still possesses all of her original intelligence and skills, but now also benefits from 17 years of life experience growing up on Kasq as the daughter of The Doctor.

SAM is an incredibly intelligent, light-based lifeform with many talents. This allows it to excel in two key positions aboard a starship: First Officer and Science Officer. As seen with Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek series, one officer can successfully handle both roles, and SAM is equally capable of serving as both the ship’s second-in-command and head of scientific research.

1. Genesis Lythe: Captain

Genesis Lythe, played by Bella Shepard in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, seems destined to command a starship. Growing up on starships as the daughter of Admiral Lythe, she’s practically Starfleet royalty and has a deep understanding of galactic life. She’s clearly intelligent, highly motivated, and knows everything about Starfleet’s regulations and past.

Genesis struggles with self-doubt, which is her biggest weakness. However, questioning yourself is common for any good Star Trek captain, even while making difficult decisions. Genesis is a natural leader who can motivate others, and as seen in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 7, she’s not afraid to bend the rules – a trait that can actually be valuable for a captain, much like the legendary Captain Kirk.
