The executive producer of Star Trek, Kurtzman, has shared exciting news about the future of the franchise, especially regarding Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He not only co-leads the show but also directed its first two episodes, which have been well-received and earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes after debuting on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a group of new cadets as they train at Starfleet Academy, overseen by Chancellor and Captain Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter. Think of it as the Star Trek version of college – a four-year program designed to prepare students for becoming Starfleet Officers, a concept previously mentioned by Alex Kurtzman.
During a recent press event for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Liam Crowley from ScreenRant asked Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunner Noga Landau about the show’s long-term plans. Kurtzman hinted at introducing a fresh group of cadets and characters each season, suggesting the series could potentially continue indefinitely. Here’s what Kurtzman had to say:
Liam Crowley asked Alex if the show still aimed for a traditional four-year college experience storyline, as previously discussed. He wanted to know if season two would move towards that goal, and if the writers had a general plan for how the show would unfold over four seasons.
We have a general plan for the story, but we always build in flexibility for unexpected ideas. The first few months in the writers’ room are spent brainstorming and keeping options open. I think it’s best to know how you want to end the season, then work backwards from that point, as it helps everything fall into place around a strong conclusion or exciting cliffhanger.
The show has the potential to run for a very long time because each year will introduce a new group of characters. This means we’ll not only continue following the original cadets, but also see what happens to them after they graduate and start working. Plus, there will always be fresh faces joining as new cadets arrive, keeping the story going indefinitely.
Paramount+ has renewed Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a second season, even before the first season finished filming. According to Alex Kurtzman, filming for season 2 is expected to wrap up in February. He also hinted that the new season will likely introduce several new characters alongside the current group of cadets.
Alex Kurtzman has expressed his vision for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy to span four seasons, culminating in the cadets’ graduation. While there’s a broad plan for a four-year story arc, whether the show gets more seasons depends on how well it performs on Paramount+ and what Paramount Skydance decides to do with the Star Trek franchise overall.

Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, have been in charge of all things Star Trek on Paramount+ since the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. His current contract to lead the franchise is believed to last until the end of 2026.
Paramount+ has commissioned two seasons each of Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to guarantee a steady stream of new Star Trek shows in 2026 and 2027.
The future of Star Trek is uncertain. Paramount Skydance might decide to end Alex Kurtzman’s current run of the show in 2026, or they could renew his contract and let him continue leading Star Trek on Paramount+.
The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is getting good reviews, and there’s a chance it could be renewed for multiple seasons. The idea is to cover a full four-year college experience for the characters. Even if Alex Kurtzman steps back from overseeing all of Star Trek on Paramount+, he’ll still be involved as an executive producer on this show.
