Star Trek star Chris Pine is involved in one of the wildest and dumbest lawsuits ever
As a long-time fan of Star Trek and Chris Pine‘s portrayal of Captain Kirk, I find it quite ironic that this real-life incident mirrors some of the interpersonal struggles we see on the Enterprise – only with weeping figs instead of Klingons. It seems that even when off duty, Chris Pine finds himself embroiled in disputes that require a cool head and diplomacy to resolve.
It appears that Captain James T. Kirk, portrayed on the big screen, is quite a sought-after figure. However, in an odd turn of events, the actor behind him, Chris Pine, has found himself in a peculiar lawsuit. In this case as strange as science fiction, Kirk (or rather, Chris Pine) is being sued by his neighbor over an alleged offense: planting weeping fig trees.
Pine, now known for the dastardly crime of planting trees, is being sued by his California neighbor Helen Yu, for planting the trees, which apparently have caused some very minor issues in his neighbor’s yard. The weeping figs, aka Ficus Benjamina trees, are at the center of a boundary dispute between the two. In Yu’s defense, Ficus Benjamina trees are very invasive and are known for having very disruptive roots. However, from what can be gleaned, they aren’t illegal to plant in California.
2022 marked another round of legal action between Hu and Pine, with Hu filing a lawsuit against him for “trespass, nuisance, and negligence”. In response, Pine filed a counterclaim, accusing Hu of constructing a fence on his property. It appears that these disputes have been simmering for quite some time now between the two parties.
In addition to the troubles at hand, Yu alleges that Pine has been evading court hearings. Since early 2023, Yu has attempted to have Pine testify in court, an act which Pine seems to be avoiding for various reasons. Now, she aims to persuade the courts to compel Pine’s appearance for a deposition, hoping it will lead to a long-awaited resolution.
The outcome of the first legal dispute remains unclear since both parties opted for mediation, but it appears that the source of the current conflict can be traced back to the repercussions of that initial lawsuit. According to Consequence.com, Pine’s countersuit occurred following the initial mediation process. Subsequently, Yu reportedly filed a new lawsuit shortly thereafter.
Initially, the article mentions that she had planned to provide him with $75,000 out of an original asking price of $271,000, which seems to be related to the land her fence now stands on. However, this transaction didn’t occur as planned. Now, it appears that Yu is demanding a new price of half a million dollars, with $225,000 specifically for emotional distress.
The worst part about all of this nonsense is that Pine didn’t have the decency to just plant pine trees, so every headline could be “Neighbor sues Chris Pine over Pine’s trees.”.
