Star Trek: Section 31 will follow other projects and get its own comic book tie-in

As a longtime Star Trek enthusiast who has navigated through the vastness of the galaxy since the original series debuted, I must admit that I find myself a bit apprehensive about the upcoming Star Trek: Section 3 movie on Paramount+. The film’s focus on an evil black-ops section of the Federation, led by Philippa Georgiou, seems to be a stark departure from the optimistic ideals that have defined Star Trek for generations.

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Star Trek: Section 3 on Paramount+. This made-for-streaming movie will showcase the ascent of the black-ops division of the Federation, transforming them into the formidable, sinister force that fans will recall. The team will be under the command of Philippa Georgiou, a previous empress.

Discovery’s second season, hinting at the evolution and progression of the questionable organization over time. Instead of a series, this story will be told within a single film. Michelle Yeoh is set to return as Empress Georgiou from the Mirror Universe, taking charge of a band of rogues in an as-yet-unknown situation.

This movie represents an effort by Paramount+ and Star Trek to infuse a touch of “Guardians of the Galaxy” style into the Star Trek universe, resulting in a seemingly light-hearted and humorous film. However, according to marketing materials, if you’re a fan, this approach might not sit well with you, and it seems that initial reactions to the project have been negative.

The quality of the project might turn out well, let’s observe first, but it’s not currently trending strongly. Therefore, learning that the movie will have a one-shot, comic book connection was quite surprising.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned IDW is releasing a comic book tie-in for the upcoming streaming movie! It’s a standalone issue, set to drop on my calendar as February 5, 2025. That’s almost two weeks after the movie premieres, which is slated for January 24, 2025. Can’t wait to delve deeper into the story!

In this upcoming book, Alyssa Wong, who’s new to Star Trek writing, will pen the story, and Megan Levans, with years of experience in Star Trek comics, will handle the artwork. Fans can anticipate the familiar style from Levans as she’s been a part of the Star Trek comic world for quite some time. The book will retail at $5.99, but certain outlets are offering a pre-order discount of $1.80, bringing the price down to $4.19.
