As a hardcore Star Trek fan with decades of experience under my belt, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard about the new young adult Star Trek series, “Starfleet Academy.” The announcement at this year’s Comic-Con was like a beacon of hope in a galaxy far, far away.
The new young adult Star Trek series’ cast has been warmly greeted into the Star Trek community. During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Star Trek panel unveiled a video message from showrunner Alex Kurtzman where he announced their appointments to the excited group.
Furthermore, Tig Notaro, Mary Wiseman, Oded Feher, and Robert Picardo were revealed to be returning to their characters in the upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery” spin-off series.
Titled “Starfleet Academy: A New Generation,” this series follows a band of budding recruits as they undergo rigorous training to become Starfleet members. It’s the perfect blend of intriguing outer space adventures from Star Trek, combined with the juicy interpersonal conflicts reminiscent of high school life. Prepare for romantic entanglements and fierce academic competitions!
At Starfleet Academy, the leading roles are filled by Kerrice Brooks (from “The Prom”), Bella Shepard (“Wolf Pack”), George Hawkins (“Tell Me Everything”), Karim Diané (“One Of Us Is Lying”), and Zoë Steiner (“Significant Others”). Holly Hunter takes on the role of the academy’s chancellor, while Paul Giamatti portrays the antagonist.
The announcement for the new show, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” was made public in March 2023. This highly anticipated series is being led by Alex Kurtzman, who has been involved in many current Star Trek productions, and Noga Landau, known for her work on The CW’s “Nancy Drew.” With a combination of modern Star Trek and Young Adult (YA) elements from The CW, it is expected to premiere on Paramount Plus around 2026.
