Star Trek: Prodigy may be the perfect show to continue with the franchise’s animation focus
As a dedicated gamer and Star Trek fan with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel both excited and apprehensive about the potential ending of Star Trek: Lower Decks. The anticipation of knowing when the final season will air is palpable, especially since we may find out during San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.
At San Diego Comic-Con towards the end of 2023, we’re fairly certain to find out when Star Trek: Lower Decks will conclude its run. The final season, consisting of five parts, is predicted to premiere in 2024. We can expect an announcement regarding the exact release date during this California convention. Once Lower Decks concludes, it would leave Prodigy as the only animated Star Trek series remaining.
If Netflix doesn’t change its approach, the traditional release of shows on their platform might continue to be a limitation for many digital series like Prodigy. This method, which involves releasing all episodes at once, may no longer be suitable for contemporary digital content. Shows like Prodigy gain momentum and engagement from fans week after week. However, this practice has negatively impacted the online community surrounding the franchise, as viewers are not all synchronously engaged with the latest content. Consequently, discussions and interactions among fans become fragmented due to differing viewing progressions.
Despite that fact, both Lower Decks and Prodigy have continued to receive accolades. As reported by Trek Movie, the Collision Awards granted “gold” distinctions to these shows in their respective categories. Prodigy was recognized under Kids & Family Television Series, while Lower Decks earned its award for Comedy Television Series.
Instead of having a single winner, this award recognizes multiple winning groups. Lower Decks and Captain Fall tied for the top prize with a gold award, while do0dbuffett received a silver. Prodigy and The Loud House: “Candy Crushed” and the Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island were both awarded gold. Additionally, five other shows earned silver awards: Big Blue, Best and Bester, Cracké Family Scramble, Isadora Moon, and Super Wish.
Based on industry perception, Prodigy is considered a top-notch show, making it highly probable that Netflix will renew it for a third season. Should this happen, we can look forward to more exceptional animation from the Star Trek franchise.
With Prodigy potentially amassing additional recognition and accolades in its third season, there’s a strong possibility of an extended run if it continues to captivate audiences.
