Star Trek: Prodigy has a major hurdle to clear for a third season
As a long-time Star Trek fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs when it comes to this beloved franchise. But let me tell you, the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy has truly outdone itself. The episodes that have been released so far on Netflix have left me in awe, with two of them even reaching the top tier of Star Trek’s best-ever episodes.
Star Trek: Prodigy’s second season on Netflix has been performing well. So far on IMDB, only one episode receives a rating below 8.0, while two episodes have scores above 9.0. These exceptional episodes not only stand out in the series but also potentially among the best in the entire Star Trek franchise.
As a longtime Star Trek fan and someone who has followed the franchise through its ups and downs, I can confidently say that Prodigy’s second season has left me utterly amazed. With an audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say that this is the best-produced Star Trek season since the launch of Discovery in 2017.
The main issue is that quality takes a back seat when there’s no fanbase engaged. The rollout of Prodigy’s second season on Netflix was problematic, as they dropped all episodes simultaneously instead of releasing them weekly over several months. This gradual release format helps grow an audience and maintain excitement for the show. Dumping everything at once can dampen some viewers’ interest.
If Prodigy only performs well within Netflix in order to secure a renewal, it will present a challenge. Furthermore, the series must also succeed internationally. In the near future, Prodigy will be released in international markets, which will significantly impact the decision-making process for a third season.
The United States market is uncertainly contributing well to the show’s success, but we remain hopeful and enthusiastic. The show’s impressive reception among fans, including us, fuels our anticipation for a new season. With its Star Trek: Voyager connections through cameos and recurring characters, this series has certainly proven deserving of another chance.
