Star Trek: Picard showrunner thinks Star Trek: Legacy coming later could be a good thing

As a longtime Star Trek fan and avid gamer, I’ve spent countless hours immersed in the vast universe of the Final Frontier. The prospect of a new spin-off series, Star Trek: Legacy, featuring Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine and Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher, has been a topic of excitement among the community for quite some time now.

Star Trek: Legacy, the anticipated spin-off of Star Trek: Picard, is currently in limbo at Paramount. For now, it remains an aspiration among dedicated fans longing for its creation. Despite being put on hold, Picard’s showrunner, Terry Matalas, isn’t ready to give up on Legacy just yet. During a recent interview on The D-Con Chamber podcast with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating [via Screenrant], Matalas explained why the potential revival of Legacy could be beneficial.

The creator of Marvel Studios’ Vision and the screenwriter for the reboot of Enemy Mine at 20th Century, Matalas, expresses his intrigue over developing a romantic connection between Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). He believes this dynamic could result in an engaging storyline, reminiscent of the banter between Bones and Captain Kirk from Star Trek: The Original Series.

What’s great about it is, if it ever happens, you can come in late, and it would be really interesting to see what happened to all of them, like way down the line… To have a more formed relationship between you and Jeri. So, I would say never say never.

Matalas confirmed that he has penned down scenes involving Jack and Seven of Nine, and he’s not alone in keeping hope alive for the series as Todd Stashwick expressed, “there’s still a possibility.”

As long as talks about Star Trek: Legacy continue, there’s hope for the show’s production. Matalas’ belief that a delayed greenlight won’t harm the series is reassuring. However, waiting too long might make it harder for Next Generation cast members to return since they could be busy with other projects. Fortunately, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and Todd Stashwick have expressed their willingness to join Star Trek: Legacy. Having the main stars on board is always a good sign!
