A new Star Trek movie is in the works, marking the first time the franchise will hit theaters in over ten years. Paramount Pictures has chosen Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley – known for their work on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – to both write and direct the film. It will be an original story, not based on existing Trek material.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really excited to hear that Goldstein and Daley are now producing the next movie through their company, GoldDay! It sounds like things are finally moving forward at Paramount after a lot of uncertainty. The new head, David Ellison, seems determined to get Star Trek back on track, and it’s great to hear reports that a solid decision has been made to actually make a new film. It’s been a long wait, and I’m hopeful this means we’ll finally get a new adventure!
According to Deadline, the pitch from Goldstein and Daily for a new Star Trek project is a fresh start, completely separate from previous series and films. It will feature an entirely new set of characters.
Goldstein and Daley have a strong history of successfully reviving struggling franchises, making them a promising choice to revitalize Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek. They’ve proven their ability to breathe new life into existing properties, notably with Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and by significantly improving the cinematic image of Dungeons & Dragons after the poorly-received 2000 film.
Goldstein and Daley recently wrote and directed Mayday, an upcoming action movie starring Ryan Reynolds. It’s scheduled to be released in 2026.
Will Star Trek Finally Return To Theaters?
Fans will probably be thrilled to hear that Goldstein and Daley are taking on a new Star Trek project. However, after nearly a decade of difficulties getting a new Star Trek movie made, fans are likely tempering their excitement. Paramount has faced significant challenges with the franchise recently, so caution is understandable.
Paramount first revealed plans for a fourth Star Trek film featuring the actors from the recent reboot series (Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and John Cho) right before the 2016 release of Star Trek Beyond. The movie was also intended to include Chris Hemsworth, reprising his role from the beginning of the 2009 Star Trek film. However, the project hit a snag when the cast rejected the studio’s initial salary offers, pointing to the disappointing box office performance of Star Trek Beyond as justification.
Several attempts to create a fourth Star Trek movie have started, but none have actually begun filming. Matt Shakman, who directed WandaVision, was once involved with the project, but later moved on to direct Madame Web when progress on Star Trek 4 stalled.
There have been several tries to create separate Star Trek films, but none have succeeded. The creator of Aliens: Earth was particularly disappointed when Paramount canceled the project.
Will Goldstein and Daley have a better chance of success than previous creators? Their established connection with Paramount Pictures could give them an advantage. However, even J.J. Abrams, who directed the 2009 Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, couldn’t get some planned Star Trek projects off the ground, so success isn’t guaranteed.
In 2026, Star Trek will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. Fans would be thrilled if Paramount could finally begin filming a new Star Trek movie as a celebratory gift.
