Star Trek: Lower Decks' actor says "there's room" for more of the series

As a die-hard Star Trek fan who has been following these series since the VHS era, I must say that the news of Lower Decks wrapping up is bittersweet. On one hand, it means we’re reaching the end of an exciting journey with the crew of the Cerritos, but on the other, the thought of saying goodbye to these characters feels premature.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is concluding its fifth season, with the last episode set to premiere on December 19th. Although it has been cancelled by Paramount+, the actors and fans remain hopeful for future episodes.

In an interview with Trekmovie, Jerry O’Connell (Jack Ransom) expressed that they are extremely pleased with this season and shared, “Sure thing! I mean, there’s definitely space for more animated shows to be picked up, right? And we certainly take pride in our last season. We’re thrilled, and there’s no sadness or goodbyes here.

And he’s right about there being more room for animated Star Trek. Netflix made room when it picked up the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy. Will Lower Decks have the same fate? Right now, it’s not looking that way, but as O’Connell said, there’s “never a goodbye.” And that’s because even as shows have been cancelled, we’ve seen some of the characters again. Well, with the exception of Star Trek: Enterprise, but that’s another story.

Mike McMahan, the brainchild behind Star Trek: Lower Decks, has additional concepts ready if Paramount chooses to continue the comedy series for another season, as reported by Bleeding Cool. However, should renewal not occur, McMahan told Bleeding Cool he harbors no ill feelings and instead views it as a successful run. Fans, on the other hand, may not view five seasons as miraculous, but rather an unfulfilled potential for this popular series.

It seems unlikely that Paramount will change its decision about canceling Lower Decks, considering they stayed firm even after a large fan campaign when they decided to end Prodigy. Therefore, it appears that the current season on Paramount+ might be the last for now, but I don’t think we’ve seen or heard the last of these characters as they are too engaging not to revisit in some way.
