Tawny Newsome discusses first live-action Star Trek comedy series

Tawny Newsome recently shared news about the upcoming live-action Star Trek comedy series she’s creating with Justin Simien. CBS Studios first announced the project at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024.

At the premiere of ‘Starfleet Academy’ in New York City, Newsome announced that the script for the comedy is finished and has been turned in to the studio. She said the internal response to the scripts was positive, but the show hasn’t been officially approved yet.

She explained that after finishing the project, the response was overwhelmingly positive – everyone loved it. Shortly after submitting it, the holidays began. She added that the project’s future is currently uncertain, saying, “Who knows?” (as reported by Trek Movie).

Newsome shared her strong belief in the quality of their work and how much she enjoyed collaborating with Simien. She said, “Justin and I are really proud of these scripts. We’re excited to see if they get picked up, but if it doesn’t happen, I’m happy to move on to other projects. We truly love what we’ve created.”

Newsome praised her collaboration with CBS Studios and Paramount+, describing them as supportive partners. She noted it’s unusual to receive feedback from a studio and genuinely feel it improved the project, but that’s exactly what happened in this case. They helped refine the show while still allowing it to maintain its original vision.

Whether or not the upcoming Star Trek comedy movie will actually happen is still unknown. The actress involved joked that its future depends on fate, saying, “It’s out of our hands now.”
