Star Trek icon William Shatner says he’s seen as little of Star Trek “as possible”

As a gamer with a deep-rooted admiration for the world of Star Trek, I find myself utterly baffled by the enigmatic figure that is William Shatner. A man who has played an iconic role in one of the most celebrated sci-fi franchises of all time, Captain Kirk himself, and yet, he seems to have a peculiar relationship with the very thing that propelled him into stardom.

As a gamer who’s seen more life than most, I’ve long surpassed the point of being surprised by what people might think about me. Ever since the late ’60s when I donned the captain’s chair as Kirk in Star Trek, I’ve been a household name. The original series may have wrapped up after just three seasons, but the crew of the USS Enterprise lived on through a plethora of movies that spanned decades. To top it off, I even helmed the director’s chair for the fifth Star Trek movie, The Final Frontier, back in 1989. It’s safe to say, I’m about as knowledgeable when it comes to all things Star Trek as they come.

Interestingly enough, when he spoke with Entertainment Tonight, it came to light that he’s managed to avoid watching much of Star Trek throughout the years. Here’s an intriguing tidbit: “Few people know this, but I’ve never seen another episode of Star Trek and I’ve minimized my viewing of the series I was part of as much as possible.” Shatner admitted, “I generally avoid seeing myself on screen, and I’ve never watched any other episodes. I appreciate it, I think it’s fantastic. I just don’t… you know… I don’t typically watch television.

Essentially, Shatner is admitting that he has only seen a handful of episodes from the original series where he portrayed Kirk and hasn’t watched any of the numerous spin-off series that have emerged since, such as The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds and others. While it’s possible he may have watched the Star Trek movie he directed, there’s no certainty about his viewing habits in this regard.

It might not be a strong distaste towards “Star Trek” specifically, but rather a lack of interest in TV programs in general that keeps Shatner from engaging with the series he’s most famously linked to. He explained, “I spend my time watching documentaries, news, sports, and other such content. Yet, I don’t watch television for some reason.” When his family encourages him to view certain shows, saying things like, “‘You’ll enjoy this,’ he just never manages to get around to it.

He mentioned, “I’ve been engrossed in documentaries, keeping up with the news, following sports, and more documentaries that have been produced, yet for some reason, I don’t watch television regularly.” Furthermore, he shared, “My family has suggested I watch specific shows, ‘You’ll find it fascinating,’ but I always seem to postpone watching them.

It sounds reasonable. Despite his advanced age, Shatner continues to be active. Last year, he starred in a documentary about his life titled “You Can Call Me Bill“. Also, remember that he ventured into space aboard a Blue Origin shuttle at the impressive age of 90 in 2021.

As an ardent admirer, I must share that William Shatner himself has expressed his readiness to reprise the role of Captain Kirk should a fitting opportunity arise. However, let it be known that whatever project we may see him in, don’t anticipate him as a viewer of those very scenes he stars in.
