Star Trek fans react over panned Star Trek: Section 31 trailer

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who’s spent countless hours navigating the final frontier since the original series premiered, I must say I’m disheartened by the trailer for Star Trek: Section 31. It seems like someone took a wrong turn at the Klingon outpost and ended up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead.

Many fans within the Star Trek community have expressed disdain for the trailer of Star Trek: Section 31. While it may attract some viewers, a significant number of Star Trek enthusiasts have voiced their dissatisfaction with the sneak peek at Michelle Yeoh’s project. The trailer portrays Section 31 in a manner reminiscent of the villainous groups from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy series.

For enthusiasts of sci-fi channels like SyFy, the trailer might spark memories of Kill Joys. Since its release, it has garnered over 34,000 dislikes on YouTube by July 30, with only 4,000 likes. This negative response marked the initial stage of Star Trek’s new content approach, which centers on streaming movies rather than series. Given the backlash from its target audience, it’s highly probable that the film is headed straight to online streaming due to this feedback.

Paramount leaders can conceal how poorly a film performs by using figures they don’t need to disclose, unlike with a theatrical release. In contrast to two decades ago, Star Trek doesn’t hold the same cultural influence it once did. The franchise barely leaves a mark in traditional toy and collectible markets, and any merchandise that does exist is often overpriced, produced by lesser-known vendors without widespread distribution networks.

It’s clear that, apart from Strange New Worlds, Star Trek series haven’t been doing particularly well, and the same seems to be the case with the Section 31 trailer, sparking criticism from fans across the web.

On the YouTube video for the trailer;

If it hadn’t Star Trek in the Title I wouldn’t have recognized it as anyting related…

So you made a Star Trek series but not for the actual audience that watches Star Trek.

Ugh, I’m usually much kinder than everyone else in the comments, but what is this?! Section 31 is supposed to be scenarios where I accidentally bump in to you, say sorry, and you die 2 minutes later. They are supposed to be the worst to protect the federation. I don’t know who they are making this for? This just makes me sad.

Why do the current Star Trek handlers seem to think Section 31 is James Bond in space? There is even an episode of Deep Space 9 mocking that kind of concept.

There seems to be less buzz about the latest Star Trek trailer on Twitter and other platforms compared to previous ones, and it appears that a significant number of fans have lost interest in Star Trek altogether.

Then you have the fans on Reddit, who seem to think this film is everything wrong with Nu Trek.

Chris Pine just had an interview where he said he’s tired of trek trying to get people who don’t like what they do to watch a show by alienating the people who DO like it and… man, is this ever exhibit A

The fact they’re making this shows they missed the point of Section 31 in DS9

They’re doubling down on the murder of millions. Not really sure you can ever bring a character back from that. Could you root for Pol Pot if he played it off as being sassy?

I like Star Trek BECAUSE it is utopian.

If I want dystopy, I can go for the other 100s of cool dystopic sci fi, that do dystopy way better than whatever this new trek is.

But Star Trek was the only Utopian vision that manage to not be boring.

kupfernikel

Wow, every last drop of cautious optimism I had just immediately evaporated. What in the actual hell was that?

APracticalGal

Remember when the Star Trek universe was supposed to be a utopia representing humanity at its best? When it was a future worth aspiring to because you wanted to live in it?

I’m about as easy to please as it gets when it comes to Star Trek. I enjoyed Discovery. I like Nemesis. I used to have the theme song to Enterprise on my MP3 player.

But this…this might be the thing that finally crosses the line into the undiscovered country of Star Trek I just can’t do

Star Trek: Section 31 appears to be far removed from the traditional Star Trek movie style, causing a rather unfavorable reaction among fans. The production team certainly faces an uphill battle to regain acceptance and approval following this harsh fan feedback.
