Star Trek fans are trying to get a beloved Deep Space Nine character a statue

As a seasoned Trekkie with over three decades of Star Trek fandom under my belt, I can wholeheartedly say that these persistent and passionate fans are truly a marvel. They’ve kept the spirit of this extraordinary franchise alive for generations, and they continue to make us feel as though our beloved characters are larger than life.

Enthusiasts of Star Trek rank among the finest worldwide, maintaining and nurturing fandoms that span from two years to six decades, based on the specific show or movie. They are an exceptional community who consistently make the actors portraying these characters feel iconic.

One method they employ is by commemorating them permanently. To date, two such figures have received the prestigious treatment of having their physical representations immortalized through statues. The initial statue was dedicated to Captain James Kirk, played by William Shatner, in Riverside, IA. This real-life city eventually became the birthplace of the fictional character James T. Kirk.

Shortly following this event, another ceremony took place in Bloomington, IN, honoring the esteemed Kathryn Janeway. Interestingly, while Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, hasn’t shown much enthusiasm for his statue, Kate Mulgrew – the actress who brought Captain Janeway to life – appears to truly appreciate her own sculpture.

Fans worldwide are attempting to erect statues of their beloved characters in their home towns. Discussions have arisen about building a Jean-Luc Picard statue in France, and a Benjamin Sisko statue in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a desire for many visitors.

Despite choosing to not participate, the Irish community is actively pursuing the construction of a statue for Chief Miles O’Brien. As reported by Radio Kerry in Ireland, supporters have amassed over 600 signatures in an effort to make this happen. Interestingly, Killarney serves as the fictional home of O’Brien, portrayed by Colm Meaney in Star Trek. It appears that Sean Ferrick, a member of Trek Culture, is spearheading this initiative.

Growing up far from the Emerald Isle, I never imagined I’d one day walk the streets of Dublin as my character did – a city that happens to be the hometown of my on-screen counterpart, the talented actor O’Brien.

It would be delightful if Killarney receives the statue, since exploring and gazing upon each statue could make for an enchanting lifelong ambition.
