As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek enthusiast with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that the recent collaboration between Patton Oswalt and IDW for Star Trek: The Next Generation #500 has been an absolute delight! The incorporation of Tribbles into the narrative, not just as adorable furballs but as entities with a collective consciousness, was both intriguing and reminiscent of the Borg – only far less terrifying!
Star Trek isn’t renowned for its high-profile celebrity fandom in comparison to series like Marvel or Star Wars. Although numerous A-list personalities do appreciate Star Trek, it lacks the constant fanfare you see with those other franchises. Instead, Star Trek’s love affair is more subtle and understated, which makes our affection for it even deeper.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got some exciting news to share! Known for his comedy and love for all things nerdy, Patton Oswalt has joined the team working on the Star Trek series. Specifically, he contributed to writing issue #500 of the Star Trek anthology, published by IDW. He collaborated with Jordan Blum on a segment about those adorable troublemakers – Tribbles!
In the series, the creatures known as Tribbles are portrayed as a collective consciousness similar to the Borg. However, unlike the Borg, Tribbles can shift their consciousness between different forms. This unique ability adds to their longevity since a Tribble’s mind is essentially immortal. It’s worth noting that the comics associated with this franchise are not always consistent with the show’s lore. Elements introduced in the comics may be rebooted, disregarded, or even acknowledged as non-canon to the main storyline of the franchise.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, the short tale from IDW’s 500th issue of Star Trek is a clever twist on one of her famous songs. The title, “I Knew You Were Tribble When You Walked in”, is a clear reference to the 2012 song, “I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In” from Swift’s album Red.
