Star Trek earns just two Emmy nominations for their shows in 2024
As a long-time Star Trek fan, I must admit that the last few years have been a rollercoaster ride for us. It feels like one setback after another: cancellations of Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy, with only Prodigy finding a new home elsewhere. The delay in the release of Strange New Worlds’ third season until 2025 is disheartening, and the lack of progress on Star Trek 4 and the unwanted film in development is just adding to the frustration.
In recent years, Star Trek fans have faced some tough times. Shows like Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy were all canceled, with Prodigy being the only one to resurface elsewhere. Strange New Worlds was significantly delayed due to the 2023 strikes, and its third season is predicted to premiere no sooner than 2025. Additionally, there’s been little progress on Star Trek 4, while the film fans are excited about is one that’s unwanted by many.
I’ve been feeling the weight of it all lately, particularly after the significant efforts put into revitalizing Star Trek leading up to 2023 and 2024. The sale to Skydance holds promise for an exciting infusion of resources, potentially leading to a surge of new content from the franchise in the near future. However, considering Paramount Global’s financial woes, the challenges faced by Paramount+, labor strikes, and the broader instability within the entertainment industry, it’s no wonder that Star Trek experienced a less-than-stellar year between 2023 and 2024.
As a gamer, I wouldn’t be shocked if Star Trek only received two Emmy nominations. Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks each managed to snag one nod. For Strange New Worlds, they were recognized for their exceptional sound editing in the Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour) category, specifically for the episode “Hegemony”. On the other hand, Lower Decks was nominated in the same category but for Half-Hour variety shows, with their episode “The Inner Fight” being the one that made the cut.
In the realm of entertainment, Strange New Worlds will face off against Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fallout, Shogun, and Three-Body Problem. Meanwhile, Lower Decks will go head-to-head with Ahsoka, The Bear, Blue Eyes Samurai, and Only Murders in the Building.
During the previous television season, Picard was the sole series to receive a nomination, equaling this year’s count with only two nods.
In simpler terms, “Hegemony” and “The Inner Fight” marked the last and second-to-last episodes of their respective seasons for “Strange New Worlds” and “Lower Decks.” Notable characters from the larger Star Trek universe made appearances in these episodes. A young Montgomery Scott was introduced in “Strange New Worlds,” while Nick Locarno, previously seen in “The Next Generation,” re-emerged on “Lower Decks.”
